I've lived in the Exmouth area my whole life and know some of the places mentioned quite well. Topsham and Lympstone are both very nice, if a little awkward for cars and parking. In terms of places to eat The Swan Inn in Lympstone is good, as is The Puffing Billy in Exton. There's also Harry's in Exeter which is exceptional, along with a few others.

I've never stayed in a hotel in the area, however the Magdalen Chapter in Exeter looks very nice and wasn't too badly priced when I last checked.

It's also worth noting that there's a fairly new footpath that links Exmouth and Exeter alongside the estuary, taking in all the villages in between, and makes walking or cycling somewhere nice to eat or drink that bit better.

Ottery is a bit rough, West Hill just outside of OSM is quite 'upmarket' & expensive, never quite worked out why.

Topsham is very nice but very expensive, Woodbury/Woodbury Salterton, Exton/Ebford/Lympstone all lovely but not cheap, there's also Clyst St Mary.

Broadclyst is a very nice village, there are plenty of others like Stoke Canon, Rewe, Silverton nearby.

What do you want in a location? Pubs, Post Office, schools, rail stations, good access? Do you want rural, semi rural, coastal?

Places like Beer & Branscombe are lovely, Sidmouth too I believe. The joy of East Devon is the access, just a stones throw from the M5, A30 & A38 + mainline railway lines & airport nearby smile

I'd have a look at Broadclyst.

It's just outside Exeter, with regular buses. It has a very nice village feel, nice local pubs, great location for the M5, nice country walks, and slightly cheaper prices than Exeter. Plus a fair bit of it is National Trust land, so it can't be built on etc..

Sidmouth. Every day of the week

Anything the other side of exeter I.e. Chudleigh,Newton Abbott, torquay etc are all dives and wouldn't bother even contemplating it. I live in honiton and is ideal for transport and has a good town but sidmouth is lovely smile

If you are retiring, Sidmouth will be fine, full of blue rinse brigade and everything closes at 5pm.

Every town, even Torquay, has its good areas. Go to St.Marychurch or Meadfoot Beach ares in Torquay and they are all beautiful but expensive.

IMHO - if you want to be in Devon then you have to venture somewhere West of Exeter, everybody East of Exeter only live there cos they cant afford West of Exeter ! ha ha haaa, in the proper southwest....

Its like living in St.Albans and telling everyone you live in London.

I know im winding people up with my comment, but its just for fun

I'll think of that when I'm in Brixham buying fish, Dartmouth, Totnes, Salcombe . . .

and this looks like a complete dive:

Newton Abbot will do.

I was on a pretty safe bet, most places are North East of Plymouth smile

I am from Torbay and like anywhere there are nice places and not so nice places. I am from Broadsands/Churston specifically which is a quite nice area of Torbay with Stoke Gabriel and Galmpton not too far away....

I'll give you salcombe and Dartmouth being nice but tithes and Brixham?!?!

I find east devon has more character, places like ottery with the tar barrels, and lil villages like east budleigh etc...

...I'm very biased mind!

I live near Honiton and would say that Sidmouth or Exmouth would be my choices if I were to move nearer to a town.
East Devon property is expensive that's for sure. It gets cheaper the further away you get.
Hope your search is making progress.

Hi, Exmouth has improved no end in the last 15yrs and does have some good places to eat, It has more of a younger feel to it than some other parts of east Devon, so is good to be close too...... Woodbury and Woodbury salterton are nice but I've never seen the appeal of topsham? Perhaps its the people that live there?

Budleigh for me... 20mins from the M5 and Exeter and close to exmouth but a good 40yrs behind everywhere else, Takes a while to get used to but its great!

Sidmouth for a few years before Budleigh which was good but its a bit more of a destination in the summer which can grind..... Except folk week of course.

I moved to Devon from Sherborne and now live in Thorverton, I ve just sold some houses in Aylesbeare, be careful which village you choose, lots of them have either no pub or a dreary empty one also no access to petrol station, I have to do a 15 mile round trip to get fuel.

If you want any help let me know I am an estate agent in Silverton

Rangeroverrover, you the guy parked outside the pub in Thorverton? If so, nice motor. Do like a well looked after classic....

I moved to Mid Devon about 3 years ago, although not Knowing much about the area, I love it. No grocks, half hour from Exeter, 25 mins from M5, and in the arse end of no where with fantastic views....
