I'm looking at changing jobs in the new year and will proberbly have to drive rather than train to work. I will therefore be looking to buy something comfortable and auto and would like an A8. As a pher naturally this will be a 4.2 smile (if you are getting a big car get a big engine) mpg not really a problem (20+ is acceptable). I dont have any experience of Audi not having owned one before so would welcome any buying advice. My budget would be around £6K as living in Somerset (narrow lanes, mud and tractors etc) is not the best enviorment for a newer \ more expensive car and I tend to do my own servicing.

I'm guessing budget of £6k puts him in D3 territory?

My advice would be not to buy an A8 (I have one) to drive round the lanes of Somerset (I've lived there).

Haha! A lot of truth in that. Plenty of "breathe in" when passing other cars in an A8 on a narrow lane.

OP: what about a V8 S4 avant (B6 shape)?

Even our A6 cause problems when we go visit our in-laws in Devon. I can only imagine an A8 would be worse.

What about something like a E60 540i?

Our old E61 felt noticeably slimmer than the current A6, was easier to place on the road and was a better drive.

good point about the roads in Somerset, not too keen on BMW (had a bad experience with a 325, head gasket\warped head). I wasn't planning on using it on the back roads just "A" roads but flooding can be an issue.

Me either, our car was a disaster (I'd never buy another Beemer), but I can't let one car spoil it for everyone.

An Audi A8 is no wider than a Transit or similar and they seem to manage all roads without a problem.

They are a lot of car for the money, I run two of them. Check all the electrics work correctly, that the suspension goes up and down correctly. 4.2TDi is just an immense vehicle and to be honest for everyday use the 3.0TDi is not far behind.

I think in the three that I have owned I have travelled close to 500k miles in an A8!

On A roads, size is obviously not a problem. On the lanes the OP originally mentioned, size very much a problem - during the 30+ years I lived in Somerset, the company Transits invariably suffered nearside scratches (and worse) after ducking for cover in hedges and verges.

The "other halfs" Rav 4 is scratched to bugg#ry by the overgrown hedgerows so taking on board the comments I think I will look to A6 \ S6. Auto seems to be a bit rarer but would still like to go V8 smile

Rural Gloucestershire gets pretty narrow as well.

damm, that does look good. Now the A8 is back in the frame.smile
I have a LWB XJ8 for a while and didn't have any problems with the local roads (although I kept to "A" roads and no trips to the egg farm smile)

Just for info - I bought my A8 in May, it's a two-owner, 4.2 L petrol, '53 reg, had 67,000-ish on it and I paid £4650.00. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but that doesn't bother me at all. Since purchase it's cost a little over £1000: £437 - paint, £190 - tyre (due to puncture), £160 - headlamp. The rest was a service at a local indie who considered it 'a bloody good car'.
