Currently reading the latest issue of Classic Cars & noticed an article regarding an Equipe that was up for auction on 26 November.

Apparently it was subject to a £10k rebuild a couple of years ago.

It sold for just £3.6k even though the Allegro International Club have values the car at £12k!!!!

So either someone had a bargain or someone massively over-valued the car.

As an ex Equipe owner I am astounded that someone would lavish £10k on an Allegro.

The valuation will be for insurance, what it would cost to replace/replicate not what it's worth in a sale ?

I've seen Mk1 cortina owners spend 35K on bodywork aloan (OK it was a lotus)so it's easyly done, allow 2.5K for a really good repray, a grand on the engine and box and 6.5K on welding biggrin

I bought an All-Argo equipe once, metallic blue 1750cc oil burning heap of junk with less than a months Mot left.

I paid £35 for it (same as the scrap man had offered) got it mot'd for £200 then after driving it a few times realised it really was as bad I thought it might be - and sold it for £200 ( I was lucky).

£35 seemed too much at the time let alone £200 so no idea how someone could pay £10k!?

I just thought I'd pop a photo up of another Equipe...just to remind us.
Don't you hate it when guys pop black and silver plates on cars which never ever had them in the first place...

As much as I like BL tat, I find it hard to understand how someone could justify spending that sort of money restoring a car such as an allegro,, unless it had some sort of sentimental value! Which doesn't seem the case here... A car is only worth what someone will pay.. And I'm pretty certain no-one at all would ever pay that for an allegro! £3.6k is enough!

I know the buyer and he is absolutely delighted with it and reckons £3600 was a bargain.

I bought mine new direct from the factory. It was crap however as I worked for BL dealer I got a good discount & my boss preferred us to drive BL products to 'fly the flag'!

Only good thing about it, apart the day I sold it, was the Starsky & Hutch stripe!!!

As for the blue Equipe it must have been repainted as I believe all Equipes, which were only built to special order, left the factory painted silver.

No doubt someone might know different however I am 99% certain they were silver only.

I have to agree Fatboy, I worked for a BL franchise at that time and I only ever saw an Equipe in silver.

To be honest Andrew, the number plate is the least offensive part of that photo.

Of its time. Did this have the twin carb 1750 engine?

I remember these things always being sat at the side of the road with one or two flat tyres. Apparently those alloys were a touch porous.

I had a lift share to school back in the 80's. My rota of lifts included my mum's VW Polo and the most comfortable car I've ever been in, a Peugeot 604 V6 owned my mates dad who ran his own business. Absolute low spot of the week was when another mate's mum's All Agro was called into action. During my school life, they went through a few of them - a white mk 1 estate, a white mk 2 estate, a sky blue mk 2 4 door and finally an Equipe. Even as an 11 year old I realised it was terrible - a 5 speed box, an orange stripe and a rev counter couldn't redeem it and I was aware that I was travelling around in something desperately uncool.

I personally think it's great that somebody has felt it necessary to lavish time and cash on something so unloved. It shows that to some people, the value of their car isn't measured in pounds and pence.

You have to applaud the lunacy clap

I understand your plight. I was also part of a lift share circle to school back in the 80s, but unfortunately it was my mother who had the Allegro. Bright orange, desperately unreliable, and as uncool as it gets. Rotted away before our eyes, only to be replaced by another of BL's finest, a Metro.

That's because you obviously love money more than you love cars. Why do people buy brand new cars knowing that once they have driven them out of the showroom they've lost a big chunk of the price they paid?

I wouldn't say so, I own an MGB which I've sunk more way money into that what it's worth and have no regrets... But an allegro,, why? Yes It is good people preserve cars such as this but I feel this is a bit OTT. If the restorer wanted a perfect example to keep and cherish, then fair game. But to sell it soon after at such a loss seems a bit crazy. I know pretty much all classics cost more than their worth, but it's normally worth it for the pleasure and experiences they give, however an allegro doesn't really give these, as much as I like old cars, the allegro really is pretty poor

That's your opinion, so obviously it has to be everyone elses opinion too??

That's the thing with Homosapiens - we are all different. In your opinion the Allegro isn't worthy - doesn't mean everyone has to think the same. I know many people who wouldn't through money at an MGB.

As for selling it after spending on it - circumstances do change you know wink

Easy gents, it may be that the previous owner values the restoration stage of classic car ownership more than the driving. Like a gardener growing prize onions that look great but taste awful thumbup

I think 3.6k for a rare and usual 'classic' is a pretty good buy!
