This setup is ideal for what is requested in the OP, I set my dads up like this... I however have been using the Phillips CED780 flip screen unit and doea the lot. GPS aerial is wired down the back and attached to flay metal panel on chassis as front of car so gives accurate direction etc. lso it has upgradeable maps via USB card and cameras with speed warnings added (she tells me when I exceed the limit of the road I am on). It also has accurate speedo as my clock says im doing 150 but its really 143!

Also includes bluetooth for phonecalls and music aswell as ipod connectivity and SD or USB stick connectivity.

Hope that helps.
That looks good but probably more hi-tech (costly) than I need, looks like it would be a bit big to fit in the cubby hole too. I do like the idea of the GPS antenna though.
Does it link to the car stereo for playback or rely on its built in speaker(s) ?

Got a great deal on flabbay, it replaced my alpine headunit so i have a clear cubby hole for laying phone or wallet and the connected ipod is hidden down there too. folds away and has removable anti theft panel.

works great as a stereo and has awesome extra loud mode and dynamic real surround sound mode

Ah, now it makes sense, it replaces the original radio unit, I was thinking of it as a stand alone unit.

I think I could go for something like that.

Thanks

the accurate speed info is fab and the overspeed warnings a very nice touch not to mention the camera warnings wink

All fab and updateable maps easy enough so should take me from UK to Lemans easy. only thing to mention is it must sit quite far forward so when it folds out it clears the dash overhang. it has tilt memory but must go to its fully recessed fold position 1st. Comes with spaces so just disguise with black tape.

Yes Please.

It sounded good until I read about it sticking out and gaps covered with tape, not sure I could live with that. Pic would be good.

Sure will do early in the new year when it's back from 6k service. Not gaps I phrased wrong. As the unit is steel and it sits forward some of the metal housing is seen. I just covered in black tape so it's unapparent pics will be posted. wink

Here is my flip up Zenec. In the "stored" position it could actually be a tiny bit further INTO the dash but looks fine in real life.

If using Google Maps would that require 3G/4G to work or can the maps be loaded in advance ? I am thinking about Scottish glens where signal can be non existant or in Europe where it would be expensive.
Navfree on android only requires GPS all maps download on to the phone and work fine up this end of the world, I just used it for some USA driving to, great free app.

I have used all types of Tomtom for years but I now use Waze too on android phone or tablet. Very pleased with it, it has some neat functions and it's free too.

I use CoPilot on Android. Yes, I purchased it originally, and have just paid £5 for the USA maps so I can use it on our holiday next month, but does all I need in the Cerb for UK and Europe. I do have a Road Angel for the camera sites as I use it in my daily and IM more confident of the RA than others.

Its because the dash has a overhang above the unit. This means the screen would be hindered when open. there is a tilt function to lean it forward but then this makes the view angle useless I feel.

All in all Im much happier this way, than having to dip my head etc as knowing my luck it would be as someone does a "brake test" lol
