Well not really.

To appreciate the old you have to see where BMW are taking the new... and it's clear that the old is so well regarded because the new just isn't holding a light to the older cars ethos generally.

Which is weird. You'd assume if people want to spend £20,000+ on an old bread van, there must be a bit of a market for a new equivalent?!

Agree wholeheartedly. Most new BMWs are unappealing, especially next to the older models (particularly the E46/E39 generation). The 2AT, X4, X6 etc. are like an April Fool's joke gone wrong & the 1-Series will completely lose any appeal when it becomes FWD. frown

I'm looking at a 'new' practical car and not one modern BMW is on the list.

Lots of old ones keep taking my fancy though.

They've really left a chunk of their old customer base high and dry. All turbos and diesel 4 pots. Is there even one NA engine left in their line up?

Since I started liking cars the entire point of a BMW was the NA 6 pot. For me they've lost their USP entirely.

Love these. I'd be sorely tempted to replace the exhaust tips though.

Anything particular in mind? The quad exhausts are my least favourite feature of both these and the E46 M3.

An Eisenmann with dual, oval tips perhaps.

Ooft. Decisions, decisions...I keep having to remind myself that a Tuscan S is what I really want as a fun car and that these BMWs wouldn't really meet my "daily driver" criteria. biggrin

I agree on the new range of crap listed above.

totally not even on my radar, in-fact, it pains me to say i would look at every other manufacturer 1st just because the brand is so doluted now.

I think that the Z4MC and the 1M are the last 'proper' M cars too.

the new M4 does nothing for me - i had one for 3 days. wasnt impressed. all a bit 'playstation' for me

One of my customers - another PH'er and a serial M3 owner - turned-up in his new M4 last week; he also said that he remains unconvinced. Doesn't look good for the future, does it?

Agreed - I'd like to try a manual, it was DCT and i really dont like flappy paddle boxes, cant see it making the huge difference that it would need to for me to be really impressed by it.

Ugly as fk this car. Hate it, the standard convertible is so much better. This just looks like a weird afterthought that should have NEVER happened.
This car may have the power etc it its been hit with the ugly stick a million times over. This car is like Susan Boyle as a girlfriend, while she has a excellent singing voice; she doesn't have the looks.
The market suggests that you are wrong and have a superficial taste in girlfriends wink

It's more about the driving experience than the aesthetic anyway. wink

Love the M coupe. Absolutely a future classic.

Z3M roadster can be had for not much more than £5k, and therefore looks like a bit of a steal to me.

No, it doesn't have the rigidity of the coupe and it will never be as desirable (most people view them as just another Z3). It won't appreciate in the same way either.

Look at Tiff having a lovely old blat in this one: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vocpe0eZUWg

90% of the car for 50% of the price, imho.

If I could find a cheap breadvan in a decent colour I'd snap it up. I'd feel pleased with a cheap roadster, but it'll never be the 'real thing'.

Seen afew cheap 2.8 breadvans (usually LHD) cropping up, normally on EBay. Tempted, but not sure if its for the right reasons...

Unfortunately they have to 'pay the bills'. It was very telling when they decided to make an X6M and X5M over a new Z4M. I suppose the numbers didn't stack up. I think it's also rather lamentable they never made an R8 rival.

Hope still exists, the M Performance sub-brand seems to hark back to old BMW values and I think the new i8 is absolutely stunning.

I'm not sure BMW stand for quite the same values as they used to (and which attracted them to me originally). The new 2AT makes me want to cry. frown

Anyway, worth a few more gratuitous Breadvan pics to lighten the mood smile

The problem with not liking the newer offerings is actually finding your ideal older BMW. - I was after a low-mileage E46 330Ci (coupé) in black with HK audio, adaptive xenons and heated leather to replace my 320i. I might as well have been looking for a trustworthy politician. - Ended-up with a Mini JCW (OH wanted a Mini, so I chose the model wink ).

Hopefully, next time I can find a nice Z4C 3.0Si Sport without satnav (don't like the built-in system). An S54-engined car would be brilliant but I don't fancy the running costs as a daily.

In the summer I run modern and classic back to back daily and really enjoy the huge difference in the way the cars drive but the Classic's do put a bigger smile on my face....

With those subtle modifications to the bumpers, wings and arches, that V8 in the front and the wheels it's currently sitting on, that's ridiculously appealing. I'd lose the V8 badges though.

Been for sale forever though.

That is indeed a beast. Rene took me for a spin ages ago: mental!

Pretty cool hack this.
