ONLY dentists are legally allowed to bleach teeth. All salons etc doing it are practising dentistry illegally. Zoom is very hit and miss, I would avoid it personally. Best to stick with a tray based system you wear at night. The Enlighten system gives consistently good results and I would highly recommend you seek someone out who does this or a similar system. The main difference is that the Enlighten trays are superior to the average local dental lab's efforts.

Wyman is one of the best.

Ditto, don't bother with zoom, home trays are the best way.

So how are all these "illegal" salons getting away with it unchallenged?

I use the Crest Whitening Pro strips from the US for about $70 (£40) for 10, even my dentist agrees they should be allowed here. If you know someone who can get them for you it's a great start - if not pm me.

They are being prosecuted, the GDC is pretty much overwhelmed it seems.

I had zoom. Bloody painful. The zingers (think electric shock up the root canal) were still a
happening 12 hours after I left the dentist. Whiteness lasted around 3 weeks. Waste of time.

Just as a starter, I tried using that iWhite toothpaste and was amazed at the almost instant results.

Trays. You may get a bit of pain after them sitting in for a while but it depends. Can also make your gums sensitive for a while too. Also make sure you don't eat/drink any foods likely to stain like coffee/tea/red wine/coke etc while you're doing the course of bleaching as they're more susceptible to staining. You can go back once you've done a course though smile

It's not a permanent solution, you will need to 'top up' however often you feel necessary.

Are your teeth stained or are you just after the impossibly white Hollywood smile?

What's the deal with whitening and sensitivity? My teeth are very sensitive to temperature so I've always avoided any kind of whitening products other than toothpastes as I'm worried they will become even more sensitive. I've used Sensodyne for the sensitivity and it makes no difference.

What do people recommend for whitening sensitive teeth?

If you have sensitive teeth, try a weaker strength of bleach, which is carbamide peroxide. I used 20% strength on the recommendation of my orthodontist.

Legal highest is 6% hydrogen peroxide or equivalent! circa 16% carbamide peroxide.

10%CP has the best evidence base for long results, home trays. Most chair side systems are defunct now as EU law stops use of higher concentrations, even by dentists. No evidence for it but that's how it is

I had custom moulds/gum shield things done a couple of years back with a dentist.

If i remember correctly the cost was just over £300 (that price also included filing and reshaping my front tooth after it grew a bit wonky).

I used Poladay whitening gel and the results over two weeks was very pleasing! (an hour and a half each day)

As some have mentioned your teeth can get a bit sensitive but it wasnt anything severe with me.

The moulds still fit me perfectly today and i usually do a weeks course every 6 months.

So you have these trays made and then do a course of sitting with them in for 90 mins for a set period of time?

90 minutes, couple of hours, all night...depending on the strength of whitening gel and how quick you want results.

The stuff ive got at the moment (polar night) i keep in over night.
