With the onset of winter I've decided to buy my Mum some winter tyres for peace of mind in the cold and wet weather.

She has a 2006 Ford Fiesta fitted with 15" steel wheels and trims, tyre size 195 50 15. I've bought 14" winters (175 65 14) and as there are so many 14" 4 stud Ford wheels available cheaply on eBay I thought that would be a good option.

I've got winter wheels for all our cars, but as it is swapping one alloy wheel for another this is straightforward. I understand that the Fiesta has wheel nuts rather than bolts: I'm assuming that I'll need different nuts for the alloy compared to the steel wheels. Will these be standardised for all Ford OEM alloys or will they differ depending on which alloys I choose? Does anyone know where I can source these nuts?

I'm hoping the stud length will be ok!

You will need diferrent ones for alloys. The nuts on the steelies are made of steel and have 45deg taper, nuts for alloys have a wider base, captive floating washer, 60deg taper.

Easiest is buying a set off ebay, if you're lucky, you might find a set with a locking set too.

You can use alloy wheel nuts on steels just not the other way round, ford alloy wheel nuts have a loose angled collar for the alloys and an angled seat on the base of the nut for steels (fords usually come with a steel spare wheel) BUT personly i would get a set a propper steel nuts as the alloy wheel nuts rattle when used on a steel (the colar is as i said loose) and if your mum is anything like my mum and worrys about every rattle and new noise it's the "quiet" route to take laugh
