I know this car is totally st in every measurable way, but i've always wanted one for some reason.
Sign of a time. I was just old enough to have a driving licence when the wall came down. Talked (a lot) with one of my mates about going to germany, buying 2 and driving back. Fortunately for all concerned, it was all just talk.

Thats awesome! The word 'car' is in the thread title, but as we've had a skip and a Trabant, I reckon I can get this in.
Should possibly be posted in the Gardens thread, but what a hoot this would be with a bit of garden to look after.

I love the interior pics on this as they bring back memories - many happy a day were spent travelling around the country in one of these as a kid. 2.9 and 4x4 maybe mean it's practical and not too slow? http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C533197

Ah, dear. There are things I was very fond of once upon a time. I know people who had them and I wanted one very much in the mid 80s. But they do show their age in performance terms now. 0-60 in the mid to high eights, 0-100 in about 26 secs, and not much more than 20 mpg. 318d performance with two and a half times the thirst.
Thirst apart, however, they remain exceedingly practical.

I had a string of sierras (1.8, 2.0, 1.8, 2.0td) culminating in a xr4x4. Bright red with a rood boy exhaust. I absolutely loved it.Edited by 0a on Saturday 20th December 20:39
Thirsty though. And very hard on tyres if you liked playing "how fast can i lap this freshly shellgripped roundabout"
Always found them a very comfy place to be. Good headlights iirc.

For performance ( and much better mpg ) you just want the older rwd version. I remember the Autocar long termer managing mid 30s on long runs - used to get that on a long run to Cornwall for the hols ( load space was long enough to avoid having your boards on roof bars and wrecking the economy )Thirst apart, however, they remain exceedingly practical.

They do benefit from the 4x4 rear end though
