Kind of wrong but I really like this!
I think that's brilliant, they wheels really suit it IMO. That's what I'd call stance, none of this camber caper! From what I hear the manual gear boxes aren't up to much though frown.

The manual gearbox is the Getrag 290 - a sought after transmission, which has resulted in nearly all manual XJ40s being broken for the gearbox to use in kit cars etc. There are very few left now.

As far as I know, the manual gearbox is the same as in my 1997 Jag: heavy clutch, with extremely heavy shifting, but very satisfying when perfected, I wouldn't have an auto

Personally I've only heard bad stories about it being weak, though then again maybe I've only spoken to unlucky buggers!
Would this be the gearbox used in the XK8/R manual conversions?

That is lovely.

Now "watching" it to see what it goes for.

It might bust the thread budget.

You're probably right.

I can still hear the transmission wine from a friend's mum's mk1 Fiesta!

Jetta GTI. 11 minutes to go! I didn't even know VW made such a thing. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vw-jetta-mk2-gti-/201349...

It was used behind the XJR6 engine and a V8 commodore apparently as well as I'm sure a few others and few a chunky and 'strong' in operation as they come, I'm sure they can handle most abuse thrown at them.

As youngrestoer says, they are very heavy to use but immensely satisfying once when in the flow. Whenever I'm stuck in a traffic jam I wish I bought a XJR V8 but when the road opens up I'm happy that I didn't buy anything else (X300 manual) - Nothing beats pretending you're in a British gangster film car chase while stirring the box of your Jag smile.

As for the V8 manual conversions I think because nothing directly bolts up you might as well use anything that is cheap and plentiful. Getting the gearbox in is supposed to be the cheap/easy part anyway, getting the electronics working is another story entirely.

When I was 18 and smokin around in my Golf GTI, my friend had a 16 Valve Jetta. They handle quite well, difficult to do the Golf trick and cock the inside rear wheel in the air when cornering in though biggrin

It is very nice. My first car was a mk1 Fiesta. Great memories, but I still struggle to see how they make such strong money. There is just so much out there you can buy around 5 grand.

Oh yes I had a few when I (and they) was younger I think they drove better than the equivalent golf and were a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Golf looked much better and the Mk2 8v is one of my all time favourite cars, I had loads as I could fix a "duff" gearbox for £10 and made a nice little profit out of them when I was a student.

Because it's not going to sell to someone who wants the best second hand car £5K can buy. It''s going to go to someone who wants the best Mark I Fiesta he can get. There is no connection whatsoever between the conventional used car market and the market for this sort of car.

And that is why people buy old Fiestas.

I have great memories of my first car, an Austin Metro City 1.0. However that doesn't make it any good and I wouldn't buy one now not least because I'm not 19 anymore and unlikely to get any action on the back seat!

Great for pretending you are in the UN - half thread budget and only 69k miles. I have absolutely no need for this but find myself rather liking it...
