Has anyone made nice alloy replacements, and if so can you send a link etc, the two cheap and nasty plastic expansion bottles on my K series R500 must go.

any help and pictures of what you have done is appreciated.

Checking levels will be more difficult.

Agreed, ive seen some with a external clear pipe to show levels, but wouldn't know where to get these..

There are some square ones available on ebay for around £30, I had one for a while but it leaked so bit the bullet and bought a proper one.

OK, you can refurb the coolant expansion tank as follows:

Take it off the car and plug all the holes.

Put in a handful of gravel, some washing powder and a small quantity of bleach.

1/4 fill it with boiling water.

Put the lid on and so long as you are sure it won't leak shake it for about 10 mins.

Result: It looks almost new again.


Rinse thoroughly before refitting!

Or, put a dishwasher tablet in, add boiling water and leave for 30 minutes then rinse and wipe out smile
