Has anyone any experience of using clay cloths rather than the more traditional clay bars. How do they compare and what lubrication did you use.

I bought a G3 clay mitt from Halfords after reading some good reviews. Apparently it's a lot quicker/easier than clay bar. Lubed it with normal shampoo mix and rinsed with water from a hose.

Clay mitt all the way.

I have converted from a clay bar to a mitt.

I used to spend an hour and a half with a bar. Now about half hour with a mitt.

Mine arrived today, what's the easiest way to keep the panel lubricated as you're claying it?

Clay lube.

You still use clay lube with the mitts, as you would a clay bar.

I ordered one from ebay, Halfords is 12.99.

Can you use ordinary shampoo with it?

That's what I bought. AFAIK you don't have to use clay lube.

Just use your normal car shampoo and water in a bucket.

Dip in the mitt. Rub away and rinse again.

I bought one from Autosmart along with their detailing spray to act as a lubricant, much quicker than a bar and it works well and can be cleaned if you drop it, but I think a bar gives better results. I keep mine in a sealed freezer bag and squirt some of the detailing spray on it to keep it moist.

Ditto.....

Could it be because it is to cold and mine with clay lube is also leaving residue and hard to work?

I've got the Clay mit and just use it with a mix of warm water and ONR in a bucket,

works a treat and loads faster than a clay bar thumbup

I would think the ambient temp has something to do with it, unless of course you're working in a heated garage.

Same as for clay mitt, ie just use clay lube or shampoo solution.
The cloths have a large surface area but you can only exert pressure over your palm, so a clay sponge/pad or mitt makes the same amount of sense. And why pay for extra area on a clay cloth you don't need... the whole point is that even a small square of painted rubber-clay will outlast the equivalent area of (small) clay bar. You don't need them blanket size at all.

Used a clay mitt (one off cleanyourcar.co.uk) at the weekend for the first time, must admit best new thing ive used in car detailing in years.

Taking extreme care as it was the first time id tried one id done the whole car (370Z) in around 25mins, taking less time now I know that it wont damage the paint unless im stupid I reckon could do the whole car in 15minutes.

Very easy to feel when the clay has got the contaminants out of the paint, no need to apply pressure just the weight of your hand and two passes and all done. Very good idea, whoever thought of it!

Admittedly my car was not heavily contaminated so im not sure how they would hold up on a bad surface as a harder clay might be needed for poor condition bodywork.

However im sold, will be ordering another 2 very soon.

How many uses would you expect to get from one?
I know it'll depend on the level of contaminants and stuff but assume they're more than single use - 5-10 uses?

Personally I cant answer yet as ive only used it the once, however it does look exactly the same as before I used it.

Id hope for at least 10 uses from it with some care, but as you say on a heavily contaminated car im sure it will degrade very quickly.
