Amsterdam Trip Tomorrow
Discussion
Good Afternoon fellow PH'ers. Tomorrow I'm venturing off to the city of hookers, funny plants, bicycles, beer and big scary people selling 'heroin' down dark alleys.
Basically i'm just asking for any first hand advice or tips regarding our 3 night trip. There's only 4 of us and were flying out in the morning. It's our first time so any experience or advice would be greaty appreciated.
Cheers
Jack

Depending on your budget, try and get into Anna for dinner. Superb food but comes with a price attached.
If you're after beer and wandering rather than clouds of weed smoke then stroll (or tram) down to Rembrandtplein. A little further south is the market (Mon-Sat) at Albert Cuypstraat with the surrounding bars and a fairly decent park when the weather's good.
Loads to do in town, I can probably lead you a little more specifically if you let me know your goals.

I've not been since the law changed over there. What is the 'go' these days with the cafes? is it business as usual, or is it more like Spain where you just walk up and down a certain street enough times and someone will offer to help you sort an evening's membership of the right sort of club?
Just musing really as it seemed at one time that half PH was constantly popping backwards and forwards for a little legal mind expansion/brain cell damage depending on which camp you sit in! These days Amsterdam doesn't sound as much of a Tourist destination for that crowd.

The practical application of the law basically means the coffee shops cannot operate within x distance of schools, daycare centres, etc.Just musing really as it seemed at one time that half PH was constantly popping backwards and forwards for a little legal mind expansion/brain cell damage depending on which camp you sit in! Nothing else has changed.
Enjoy yourself, and take more money than you think you need!!
For breakfast, there is an awesome pancake shop oposite the large Apple store. You can have pretty much whatever you can imagine in it, its epic!!
Weed, try the Green House Cafe's, seem to be fair on pricing, nice atmosphere, and if your a newb they will be kind on recommendations.
Food, and beer, both expensive, and a lot more than here, but then it generally is better.
Visit the Heinekkin (I cant spell it) brewery, worth it, free pint at the end, drinks in the tasting room, then a good canal trip on their own boat, which puts you the other side of town. 18 Euros from memory.
Ive been twice this year, loved it. Good for a weekend

As above really, me and the girlfriend went last month for a long weekend and I found it very expensive. I've been 4 times previous with mates and didn't realise how expensive it was as we just drank beer and ate cheap.
Heineken experience is fantastic for 15 euros. I've always enjoyed Amsterdam more when I haven't had a set plan, just go with the flow it's a great city.

Used to work there and never did any of the tourist stuff till I went back on the way home with the gf from Germany
Did a boat tour thingy and I really enjoyed it, nice way to get out the cold as well
Clearly this is a nice thing to do with the Mrs, maybe less so with the lads.
Don't get run over by trams and bikes

See how many you can visit
Would agree with everything else that's been said, been 3 times now and thankfully the red light district area is so much safer than it was about 10 years ago
Watch out for steep stairs after a few coffee shops, for example the sex museum has some horrendous ones to get you down from the top floor

If you like good Indonesian food then I recommend the Kantjil & de Tijger at Spuistraat 291-293. Ask for a rijsttafel (rice table) of whatever meat you prefer. You'll come out full and redolent of peanut satay. It's a pilgrimage for me each time I'm there for walkabouts.
On that subject, take good shoes for walking! I seem to end up doing many kms every day walking/staggering around exploring. And use a map - it has a kind of circular layout than can lead to you walking for ages only to find yourself back at the starting point.

In the red light district , red lights in the window mean they are real women, blue lights often mean transexual, red and blue lights... they have the looks of a woman but have the meat n 2 veg. Hated walking round that seedy hole. much better things to see and do in Amsterdam than walk round a meat market.
You don't say if its a lads trip or couples.
A free tour of one of the diamond houses can be interesting...but can get a tad expensive :-)
First time I went with my wife and we ended up buying a necklace. 2nd visit about 6 years after they upheld there promise to give fair market value as part of an upgrade and we bought a new necklace with a bigger & better diamond. Not been back since, need to save up :-)
