Jenson Button to stay at McLaren!

UPDATE: McLaren confirms JB will partner Alonso. They're disagreeing already...

It's official! Jenson Button will drive for McLaren-Honda in 2015 with Fernando Alonso. Kevin Magnussen remains in the team as test and reserve driver.

"Just woken up, what's going on?" Tweeted Button

So is it time to be excited by McLaren-Honda returns to F1? The team is understandably rating its chances, suggesting the three drivers will now begin 're-establishing the ascendancy of one of global sports most iconic unions' and also one of motorsport's 'most dominant partnerships'. It has quite a legacy to live up to second time round, with McLaren-Honda originally winning 44 times in 88 races between 1988 and 1992.

Of course it's impossible to mention McLaren-Honda without Ayrton Senna. Alonso has described the Brazilian in his comments as "my favourite driver, my idol on track, my reference." Moreover, apparently denying rumours he will leave if results aren't immediately impressive, Alonso added: "I am joining this project with enormous enthusiasm and determination, knowing that it may require some time to achieve the results we are aiming for, which is no problem for me."

Alonso worships Senna, Button likes Prost - incendiary?

2015 will be Jenson Button's sixth season with McLaren and you will be pleased to know he's already causing mischief with his new teammate. Jenson's favourite old McLaren-Honda driver? Alain Prost... "I admired Ayrton Senna enormously, but, for me, it was the exploits of his McLaren-Honda team-mate Alain Prost that inspired me most as a boy... I have tried to emulate his driving style ever since." We all know how that one ended!

Button of course has a great deal of experience with Honda having used cars powered by them between 2003 and 2008. Of the new agreement he said: "Being a part of new-look McLaren-Honda is a wonderful opportunity for all of us... I am absolutely raring to go."

Next for the McLaren Honda team will be the Jerez testing in February ahead of the first race in Australia. Should be a good season!

Original story, as reported 0900h 11/12/2014:
There is nothing confirmed currently but it appears very likely that Jenson Button will be retained by McLaren for the 2015 F1 season. Following Fernando Alonso's return to the team there has been endless speculation about whether Button or Kevin Magnussen will partner him. Now many news reports are stating that Button will officially be announced as Alonso's team mate later this morning.

All smiles at McLaren, for now at least

The case for Button from the 2014 season was a good one. He had outqualified Magnussen in 10 of the season's races but, perhaps more relevantly, also scored more than double the points with 126 compared to 55.

It has also been said that Button will only be on a one-year deal with a salary 'reduced by at least half' from his 2014 wage. There has been no comment from either Button or Magnussen on the impending announcement. We'll update the story as soon as there's anything new!

Hopefully the story is true. The right decision for the sport. JB is a great ambassador for F1, his team and his fans. I also hope McLaren have the sense to retain Kevin as reserve/test driver as he has proven his capability this year too.

Just to say if true, Ron you have made the correct decision.
JB won't let you down.

Hope Kevin stays or gets that 3rd car?

Shock!
Button is staying!
Guess his backers and the fact the that he is accepting a salary at a reported half of his previous £12m a year says it all.
Let's hope they keep Magnusson as back up driver, he's one for the future.
But watch Alonso walk after one season if the car doesn't produce the goods; it will be the cars fault of course, not the driver of that happens.......

Another boring season of middle pack results. A safe bet for Mclaren, but a boring result for the fans
Don't get me wrong, I like JB, but he's not exciting or bringing anything to the sport that makes me want to watch it

Ridiculous that it has been allowed to drag on so long. In a year of development it makes sense to have an experienced driver who obviously has close ties with Honda. Alonso is allegedly going to be on $40 million per season with the option to leave if the car is useless, so he might throw his toys out of the pram and do a runner. I presume Kevin will be nominated reserve driver. Hope things work out as we need a British entered winning car (how much of the Mercedes is actually built in Germany!!!)

Oh how our hearts will bleed for him- poor b**tard, one of the worlds best jobs, free worldwide travel and he gets about £6mil for the hardship... ;-)

(Ron, I'd have done it for £2mil, just saying')

Serious, I hope this is true- JB and FA (whatever you think) has to be the strongest pairing on the grid and if Honda pull one out of the bag things could get interesting.

This is good news! With a new, un-proven car setup between mclaren and honda, they need all the experience they can get! And you can't get much more then JB & FA!

According to the BBC, Ron was backing Magnessun as he had much more $$$ to bring to the pot with his Danish backers. I'm glad the board saw otherwise and chose JB!

Let it drag on for so long he has no where else to go and you have him over a barrel for a healthy salary drop. Nice work. tts.

He should wait until Kev gets a new job elsewhere and tell them he's changed his mind and go and drive sports cars.

Good outcome, but looking ahead, I hope that Button and Alonso have a good car for next year, with Button doing his last year in F1 and finishing 1st in the World Championship, and he then decides at the end of the season to retire from F1 on a high that he deserves and switches to LMP 1 to team up with Davidson. This would allow for Palmer to move into Button's old seat and we still have a Brit at McLaren (no disrespect meant to Magnusson, he did a great job, but I like to see at least one Brit at McLaren if possible). Likelyhood of this happening, probably nil, but I can but hope....

Another year listening to him moan the car balance isn't right, his team let him down, blah blah blah.

I feel sorry for Kev Magnussen he had a more than solid rookie year against a former WDC and hardly embarrassed himself, now he's left without a seat long after all the others have been taken. I hope McL haven't cost him his F1 career.

Really? I would say LH and NR are stronger: LH and FA are equals really, but NR has upped his game a lot and I would say is comfortably a better and quicker driver than JB right now.

Which is as it should be, given the age difference.

I really like JB as a person, but I'd rather have seen KM get the nod instead. He could learn a huge amount from driving alongside Alonso in a season.

Quite the opposite for me, mate.
Button is about the only driver who appears to have a personality and even has the temerity to express an opinion. He can drive a bit too.

No, NR has been hanging onto Lewis coat tails at the best of times, his success this year comes off the back of a great car but his inexperience showed up a couple of times (Spa) JB is a solid choice who's cumulative experience with FA is the best thing Honda and Mclaren need to get their car working.

Its not by much admittedly but they are IMVHO the best pairing.
