Wow, lovely!

When was the last time you saw a R5 on the roads?
I can't believe after writing this last night, I saw a R5 on the road today.
The last time I saw ANY 5 on (or off) the road was a couple of years ago, and it was a barried gold 5 GTTurbo in Hatfield. Except for that example, I don't think I've seen a 5 anywhere for many a year. Step forward Mr Coincidence.....

So I read SOTW on Friday, and enjoyed this week's example. Then yesterday I had to drop the wee man and wife off somewhere in Edinburgh for a friend's b-day party. There under a covered communal car park was a forlorn H reg, champaign gold 5. No tax disc in the window (I figure that's cos its been there a while rather than the recent change), covered in dust, tyre propped under one sill and the drivers window down an inch or two. Sad sight. As I left, I had a glance at the tailgate and it was only a bloody Monaco! What are the odds?

Anyway, good shed this week. Reckon it would make an amusing little sleeper if left standard looking but with decent wedge of money spent on a proper turbo conversion. Those seats might be a bit slidey if cornering with enthusiasm though.

i had one of these in 1989. Interesting to see how positive people feel about owning one. It is a totally terrible car with not one redeeming feature. I swapped it for a Citroen BX and felt i had attained the sunlit uplands of motoring nirvana. Now i understand the new enthusiasm for Porsche 964. People have no idea...

Wondering quite how many have actually driven a 5.......awful finishing, panel gaps a mile wide, rust appearing in bizarre places, cheap plastics and worst of all its literally a tin can..had one for a year or two (you could dent the door by being moderately forceful and I made the mistake of lending it to a friend more used to a Volvo who promptly ripped the handbrake lever out of the floor..).it was utterly hideous with no redeeming features appreciated at the time.....

but...... it did have a certain style and gallic charm.......top shed!

I was reminiscing with a pal last night on the good old days of flaky small French car ownership, and this very car came up in conversation! Strangely nice piece of kit and semi-quick (even better if you bolt a turbo on it, as a lot of people were doing with a 1.7 turbo install into 5GTTs back in the day).

Now that might be worthwhile . I snorted about not having T/C and ABS , it doesn't go that fast !

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

My mother is the owner of this Monaco as it never sold back in 2014 and it has been off the road since this time.

Unfortunately it has deteriorated a little over this time and is likely to need a couple of sills either side and a general overhaul after being off the road for a few years.

We are currently undecided whether to sell it as is or put the effort in to put back onto the road and was after people's opinion as to what option is worth while.

I would Suggest give it a wash take some photos of good and bad and put it on eBay that's the quickest way to find someone who can be bothered to fix it up as financially does not make sense unless your really want one, that way it will get saved...

As you can see it's got a few bumps and scraps around it and some little rust bubbles in places. Definitely will need new sills as they are holed. Still starts and drives although brakes will need an overhaul and a tune up/service along with a new exhaust system as it blows.

Your best bet is to advertise it on a Renault forum ,hoping you find a 5 Monaco fan.

It's really not worth a lot as is.

I really like this. I hope it goes to a new home. I've neither the time or space to keep it but I hope it gets fixed up smile

Well we might get it sorted and back on the road ourselves as it would be nice to see it up and running again, especially given its rarity nowadays.

+1 - Readers Car feature please!

Much more interesting to me than the common German car threads that we get on here

Good luck with the rescue - I still have a soft spot for these cars. Hope it all goes well and it's back on the road soon.
