60k mile 500 SEL "The time has come to sell one of my cars. I need the garage space. Sad to see this one go. 500 SEL. Long wheelbase. 60k miles. Time warp condition (1982). Everything works, even the air con! Send me a message if interested and make me an offer." http://www.gumtree.com/p/mercedes-benz/mercedes-50...

I may be swimming against the flow here, but LPG really puts me off, especially on a big-old barge. I worry, amongst lots of other things, that reluctance to pay fuel bills may just hint at parsimony elsewhere.

I like that. I really like it. Rubbish ad, and it's on gumtree (which I avoid on principle), but nevertheless...

Actually, sense will prevail unless I really do want to 'press to test' on Madame CdeG's threats!

I like it in theory, and I guess it would have cost a significant amount to put in (and have required some commitment to recoup the cost). With petrol coming down the benefit is diminished right now in any case (I have done over 300 miles for around £55 so far this weekend, not bad).

Do these only have 260 bhp though?

Yes, the mk iv increases it to 280 bhp, it's definitely adequate, I would say the mk iv feels quicker than a e46 bmw 330i for comparisons sake, their hasn't been an occasion when I've ever felt I've needed more power, put the hammer down and it really shifts at a suprising rate, not one for the twisties though, the mk 3 is slower but I wouldn't imagine by a massive amount.

Thanks r129 - just a pioneer head unit, nothing special. General audio is a later project!

This sounds rather interesting: www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C569882# £1,999

"A phenomenal, 1 lady owner from new, with Full Supplying Main Dealer Service History by Mercedes Benz!!!
Sadly her husband passed shortly after purchase so absolutely EVERYTHING was done by the supplying dealer, even wiper blade replacement, bless her!!"

Makes me feel like owning another 190. Ultra-low spec and colour combo appeal too!
I love it too, but the colour is a complete no-no for me.

After nearly 10 years living in Germany, I could live with Taxi-spec, but absolutely not Taxi-colour. [Although it's miles better than white.]
Wife has just spent fifteen minutes looking at this car. Hankering again.

For old stuff with limited appeal, I actually rate gumtree. I have purchased and sold lots of old Hifi on there and met some very reasonable people. Don't try buying or selling a mobile phone there though!

To be fair he does say "make me an offer"...

Photos look great. I wonder what decade they were taken in. I wonder what offers he is looking for. Quite a thing. Rich pickings in the thread lately.

ODO says 97k but it's in kilometres. This probably means it's an import of some nature, maybe Isle of Man?

I think i'd want the 280bhp one at least - I realise that I should probably buy a car a little different from the w124 to run for a while. I do miss (slightly) the 4.2 v8 from the a8. Does the Lexus have an interesting v8 noise under load, or is it more the silent type?

If that checks out as per the ad I can see it popping up at a higher price elsewhere at some point in the future.

I like the colour combination - when in Germany I look out for w124s and 190 taxis though!

I really like that.

I wish I could spare £40k for this though:

Definitely the silent type in standard form, you should checkout YouTube to hear what they can sound like in non standard form, they can sound great but I think part of the LS experience is the fact they are so muted at any speed.

I'd have to get a period-look Becker head unit though. I have that Alpine head unit and it's good but not pretty.

This 129 500 SL caught my eye. Maybe a bargain for one prepared to travel to the Province. Looks good in anthracite metallic.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-MERCEDES-SL-500-COU...

This is 5 minutes down the road from me. It's just been detailed, and I believe it's had some paint to the wings (the detailer does my cars). Seen it around a fair bit and looks tidy.
He say in the ad he will collect any potential buyer from Belfast City Airport.

Well, I live 5 mins from the airport - I wonder will he collect me from there and save me a 70 mile trip . . . ?

Showed this ad to the Mrs last night. Considering I already have the SEC and the 320SL I expected short shrift; but her immediate reaction was "that's lovely;

why don't you just buy it?"

I hoped she would give me a bking at the mere suggestion, so now I'm studiously ignoring the ad until it finishes.
