Cheap at around 4.5, but clearly due to the engine management light. Could be worth a gamble if you have a friendly decent mechanic.CharlesdeGaulle said:

This looks very proper and correct. Love the interior, but not mad about the Willow (that's just my feeling on things, mind)

As for the import side of things, my SL is a HK car; it has no corrosion at all, and no issues for insurance.
Whether they are less well-protected or not I can't say, although I doubt that MB would have protected cars on the assembly line for any particular market any differently than others, but on the basis that they all go eventually, and the imports appear to have no rust, it's probably at least buying you some time before it shows.
Folks - a barge mission for you! My old man is in the market for a diesel Merc estate, towards the upper end of this thread budget, and must be an estate. Has anyone seen anything decent around? Ideally not a massive engine as he doesn't want to pay too much road tax. I'm going to get browsing but would appreciate if anyone has spotted any gems

Surely at the top end of this budget you would be buying a car pre-2006 and ergo getting fixed £285/year VED? Chicane-UK said:

The age old question - does he really require a diesel? A diesel means he is chasing a more popular specification so may pay more for a higher mile example than if he looked at petrols. From the experience of some posters on here the Merc diesels at this price level do not always seem very worth it in MPG either, and it seems reasonable to assume a petrol may on balance be more reliable.
"That's what he wants" is a very fine answer - I have long since decided against guiding my parents when they have made up their mind (eg I told my Dad he would regret buying his SLK320 as they are not well built, would he listen, no. He regrets not going R129 now!).

Yeah it's a good point well made. They use the car virtually every day and actually seem to do a fair amount of miles. They're going from a '97 C240 which has been a really solid car to be honest despite being just short of 200,000 miles but the fuel economy on it is HORRIFYINGLY bad which is what has lured them into trying a diesel out. I think they'll do the kind of miles that'd make it worthwhile. I may well look to steer him towards other engines and even marques to be honest. He just loves Mercs - having basically owned only a W124 estate and a C240 Estate in the last... 12-13 years... both of which have done an easy 100k in his hands, and have been pretty bomb proof, he's pretty loyal to Mercedes Benz. From the experience of some posters on here the Merc diesels at this price level do not always seem very worth it in MPG either, and it seems reasonable to assume a petrol may on balance be more reliable.

I had the 320 version until last year.I had a light as well.....
Leaky turbo inlet seal, dripped onto the shaft that turns the silly flaps inside the inlet manifold, shaft gums up from the drips, stepper motor for the silly flaps blows, engine light comes on (don't remember it going into limp mode though).
As it's modern manufacture the smallest component to replace is......the entire bloody inlet manifold ! Just over 3 grand at a main stealer
Fortunatly I had the seal replaced 18 months previously for £130 and Merc cover the component PLUS consequential damage if it fails within 2 years - result! (Still a st design of seal though).
The common fix is to whip the plug off the stepper motor and shove a small resistor across a couple of the pins - no light, cheap bodge!
Tempting.......
