What's the consensus on this s124 E320? Good money has been spent on it to be fair... still more than most would consider paying for one though I think.

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C603986

Looks good, but expensive for a private sale.
I was thinking the same- thing is I'd want about £6k myself if I was to be parted with mine, as it will owe me 8-10 by the end of the year.

Best not sell it then! smile

ETA: just noticed that this doesn't have headlight wipers, when they all came with them- sign of damage perhaps?

Seems like a lot of car half of thread budget and 66k miles.

Something to point out with these is that the fuel economy readout is in US gallons so it's using less than you expect.
Fun cars if not sophisticated. For that money I'd get an Overland with the High Output V8 rather than the Limited with the normal V8. The H.O. V8 is surprisingly quick and sounds great.

It also seems to be quicker than a BMW X5 4.4i:

Any bargers in London on June 1st? Going to be in town and thought if anyone is free it'd be nice to meet up. If you happen to also like Bryan Ferry then there's a spare ticket to see him at the Albert Hall that night, gratis.
Bummer, I'd have bitten your arm off, but sadly fly to Germany for some adventurous training that day. Would have been nice to meet 'one of the clan', with the music being a welcome bonus.
Dang, that is a shame- would have loved to have seen your a124.

Yep! Had an email back...It's the "Gary" I thought it would be.

Anyone serious about owning such a car could probably do no better than this one at this price.

I guess you know more about it than many, like previous mileage and how long ago you sold it.

However, not sure i would want to buy a W140 with a month MOT left and not having it checked over.
I would not be so worried about the MOT as potentially for other things but would need someone who knew what they were doing to check it out.

Based on my experience of W140's, I would want:

- start from cold
- a decent test drive including up to motorway speeds and over speedhumps
- check all the electrics with focus on climate control and air con
- check self-close doors and boot
- brake lines
- any exposed wiring in the engine bay or any funny noises
- check for clunks or hesitation on gears including in reverse
- local and unlock a few times
- any oil leaks in the engine bay (or has it been steam cleaned)
- rust on arches but give me a mechanically A1 W140 with some bodywork issues than the other way round

It should be:
- very quiet
- go like stink
- stop surprisingly well

Not sure that someone on here has not already tried to buy it. I am shocked and dismayed!

Heathens

:-) Where is R129SL, he should be all over this!
Well had some funny looks when checking a car out before, when measuing paint thickness etc but listening to wires.. that's a new one! Would you hear them arcing if they are degrading??

Fuel consumption on the Overland (4.7 V8?) is even worse. I had one for a week when my Cherokee was in for a gearbox replacement - luckily I could claim my mileage back but it was pretty tragic. Part of the problem is it sounded great & when you rev the engine it rocks like a muscle car so you do this a lot. Also, very childish, but immense fun zooming away from chavs in Corsas at traffic lights. I took a colleague out in it during a lunch hour for a bit of a laugh. We emptied the tank in less than 100 miles...

You do get automatic entry onto the Greenpeace st list with one of these though, and you also make new friends at your local petrol station.

Smaller on the inside than they seem but overall a pretty good car.

By all sane reasoning that is just impossible to argue against for £2795! It's frankly amazing! In fact, that's just what I should be driving on my daily slog to work each day.

But why is that just find it impossible it ever get excited about or feel any love for anything made by Audi?

I just know that if anything broke on it (which all cars do...and probably so on this less than most cars that I've had) that I would be disinclined to spend money to get it fixed.

Out of necessity because it was the only thing that was wide enough to accommodate 3 baby seats across the back that I could afford at the time, I had a SAAB 9000CE Turbo many years ago (18 years ago). I felt the same about that. It had a couple of bad but fixable 'breakages'. However, upon the third but fixable 'breakage', I stepped up the wicket and whacked it for six high and handsome over the Gasometer into the scrap-yard!

I just know I'd feel the same about an Audi.

They're actually not very big on the outside. They seem closer to a Freelander than a Range Rover.
They pull from a standstill in a way which is pretty comical and the kickdown is like being kicked in the head. Skips a bit over bumps.

I really like them. Just pottering about normally I used to see around 16-18mpg from the High Output V8. I really fancy one now.

I love that. But, if I bought it, I'd be a dead man. No ifs, no buts. Dead.

But, were I to buy it - as a little runabout for the wife and newly-driving daughter, natch - does it have aircon? Ad says so, but I don't know the 190 dash well enough to see which buttons do what.

That is gorgeous. But why oh why would you pour 11k into an old Merc only to flog it for a horrendous loss?

Whilst we can laugh it off on this thread, I agree. Even by the standards of the most powerfully built directors, £11,000 is a lot of money.

I really GET 190s. REALLY. But I'd struggle to pay more than £3500 for that car. It's not exactly low miles, it has 'part service history' and the air con is probably the old system that is now obsolete and almost impossible to maintain.

I know you should always TRY to start from the best possible place with these cars, but I still think half of that price would get you into a good car that you can then maintain yourself, in the knowledge that things have been done well.

I think you are on the wrong thread

hehe
Oh don't get me wrong. I'm as happy as the next threadist to pour it in, I just think it's a labour of love so why would you then flog it off, and take a bath to boot. Does not compute.

I don't think they're in the category of a modern-ish barge which you tend to keep for a bit, fix as appropriate then move on to the next.

Maybe it's just me.

In many ways no one needs anything more in a car than this offers. Nice looking colour combo with desirable Bolero wheels. Right around the corner from me too. <5 miles.
