The 8 holes are a thing of beauty and definitely my favourite R129 wheels. However, the ones Oa has taken such a dislike to, are quite an attractive wheel on the SL. I'll admit, their understated styling would perhaps come across as a bit 'bargain basement' on a C Class. Not that the C Class hasn't tried to go upmarket now - the 190E was stylish, compact and understated. Every C Class I see these days is over-wheeled, under-tyred and adorned with some AMG bodykit to 'compliment' the wheezing four cylinder diesel under the bonnet. Gauche is not a strong enough word.

The temp guage is perhaps reading a little high though.
Lovely interior! Temp guage normal if the car has been stood idling for a prolonged period. Guage is at the point where the fan is about to engage.

Looks like an honest machine.

Temperature is ok. The electromagnetic clutch for the cooling fan on the M102 engine won't cut in until the temp reaches 100 degrees.

Very nice find! That particular interior looks completely impervious to even the most determined of child's efforts to destroy it.

The drivers seat does look as new in those pictures as well.

I did have the 8-hole ones on the pre-facelift 280SL that I had which are obviously nice too but I did really those ones on the post-facelift car a lot...very subtle, non-aggressive look, I thought.

Those are the rims on mine, 16'" and I think they suit the car well in preference to the larger rims. They fill the arches decently and the ride is compliant.

Almost identical to the interior on mine!

Wow that's a lovely old thing. The temp gauges can be a bit disconcerting on those cars, they are quite accurate rather than set to sit on the centre line so do go up and down a fair bit. It should sit just above 80 on the move and creep up to the centre line in traffic, maybe above in very hot conditions.

I think I read that the temp gauge in my E39 will stay on the centre line until it reaches 113 degrees - if it goes over its going to go quick and straight to the red line!

Have you seen BMW's press campaign celebrating 40 years of the three series? I am sure I am not alone in thinking that the product has only got worse as time has passed. The E21 looks like a masterpiece; the F30 a dog's dinner.

It is interesting to see that. My favourite looks wise is definitely the E21 323i with the two exhausts like wheelbarrow handles on the sides. Always has been.

I haven't been in the F30 so perhaps it is unfair for me to call it the low point, but I will because of the lack of six cylinder engines. I wouldn't get a BMW which didn't have a six.

It's not a linear progression downwards for me though - the E90 is considerably better than the E46. For me with its frumpy looks and rust, the E46 is the previous low point. They're not as good to drive as the E90 either - and are more troublesome in my experience too.

I definitely think the styling has just become bland, almost like its computer generated. And the compulsory stupid great wheels that ruin ride comfort. You used to be able to tell the car just by its silhouette but now it could be anything. BMW are by no means the only ones guilty of this.

Apropos of nothing, I've just had my first explore of a mkI Zafira, and reluctantly have to admit that whoever designed the rear cabin packaging was nothing short of a genius.

An opportune moment to crave the thread's indulgence:

I've tried, but I really can't warm to the 12 spoke Monkar original wheels on my SL, and it is going to need new tyres soon, so..... I have toyed with the idea of replacing them with 8 hole wheels, but part of me feels (and apologies to those who roll on them) while the small wheels (15s) suit a 124, the 16" wheels do look somewhat under-nourished in the rather commodious wheel arches. I'd like 17" Evo II wheels, as seen on many E500s, but they're not OE, which bothers the geek in me, so 18" AMGs beckon - can any threadists with SLs on 18" wheels advise - will they destroy the ride, or is the suspension compliant enough to cope? Thanks in anticipation.
Are these the wheels you have (after a google search!). They look like the later C class 180 hub caps to me. Horrible - why did Merc make these the standard wheels on the SL and S?

It's funny, my SL (identical in colour/year to that one) has the 12 spoke wheels which I wasn't keen on- I really fancied a set of the 8 spoke rims. 20 months on from buying it and they've really grown on me to the point where I'm looking for a decent set to replace the current ones. I like the understated look (not at all keen on AMG/ bigger versions)-keeping them clean stops them looking too drab. We're all different though and I get why some would want to change them. Great cars all round.

Presumably this is about one third as good as it looks, given the price and mileage. You would have to like blue, as well.

I noticed that campaign in the new issue of Evo. Slightly surprised that it went E21-E30-E36-F30 in the mag, so I'm pleased that they have bothered with the E46 and E90.

I can't read the text on the E46 and E90 ones above, though; the others seem to be promoting aerodynamics with slightly clumsy comparisons to contemporary events, which struck me as odd.

As for the F30 being a dog's dinner; well, I don't think it lives up to its forebears in looks, but every iteration before it has been styled brilliantly, IMO.
