Why two? Genuine question not being funny.
I seem to remember many years ago my old man having what he called his Israel and South Africa passport. As A stamp from one of those two countries knackered you for getting into many other countries.
Do you have two now for similar reasons?
If one passport is away for a visa you can still travel on the other. Pretty simple really.
Exactly.

I first got two when I was traveling to both Lebanon (and other Arab countries) and Israel quite a bit. Life was much easier with a "clean" passport.

Now, the time it takes to get a Russian visa makes it crucial to have a spare.

Sorry for asking a question, as I don't fly every week to countries requiring a visa I hadn't thought of that. I apologise for being so simple.

Condescending prick.

Wow, just wow. I very rarely post much on this website as you have to filter thru a lot of arguing and bickering to find the gems that are out there.

I didn't intend to be involved in any of it, so I rarely post.

Anyway to clarify I was not in anyway trying to be condensanding just trying to explain as simply as I could what a 2nd passport is for. If I was trying to be condensending I'd add something like below

It's not like in the movies for when the establishment are after you like in Jason borne. You have a '"legend" get away pack. With a fake name, credit cards, a stick on moustache (with glasses, banana nose, optional obviously for comical effect and not to clear customs)

Anyway at least you know what it is now and I'll retract further posts from this website as people seem to get severe butt hurt when they get the answer they ask for if its not sugar coated in glitter and sparkles.

Yes, this ^^^
I now need to travel to Russia for work, but I also need my passport for travel every week to other places and also for locally required ID since the UK doesn't issue 'Schengen' ID cards.

I spoke to the Passport Office and explained what I needed and they told me the requirements over the phone. It was a bit of a pain to meet their needs, but far less than not having valid ID/passport if you've 1 to use every day.

its pretty straight foward actually. all you need to do is get your employer to draft a letter stating why you need the second passport. if you PM me i can send you a copy of the one our HR dept. sends out.

then you just apply as normal, although the initial application for a second PP requires you to send your primary one away with the forms. applications for renewal on either only require the expired/used PP to be sent away.

you can do it same day in person but doubt that's an easy option for you.

i always carry both. have had my PP confiscated a couple of times [overzealous african police] so its nice to know i can still GTFO if needed.

Wow, somebody needs to have a cup of Horlicks and chill out. I didn't read anything unreasonable or condescending into Bushman's post, certainly nothing that warranted that level of abuse...

Just don't end up in a situation where they search you and find you have two passports. That is not fun as the instant conclusion is that you are a terrorist of some description.

I applied as a 1st passport application with a letter from my co. and certified colour copy of every page of my current live passport. I was very pleased they only took 2 weeks.

I wouldn't carry both when out of my 'home country' for the reason already stated above. smile

Anywhooo, only posted about it here in case anyone else needed the same - not because I've different names/nationalities à la Jason Bourne!

At least it wasn't just me that was surprised to be called a prick for answering a question. I'll need to filter and proof read future posts.

I was going to explain all the requirements that was needed for a 2nd passport but I thought I'd give it the short and sweet answer as it may have been over the top and since he didnt travel much to country's with embassy's who have lengthy visa processes he might not be interested.

Anyway at least it may be of help to others now.

Some criteria that's needed

1. Letter from employer stating reasons for 2nd passport.

2. New passport form filled in as if it's your first passport, countersigned as well.

Oh also if you do travel a lot on both passports at renewal ask for extra pages as its worth its weight in gold when you can go thru them every few years due to over zealous officials stamping for the sake of stamping. Think it's an extra £30 for same day pick up service.

Also I know of horror stories abroad when local agents lose your passport while it's away for stamps etc it's nice for a spare in your hand luggage. My friend went 3 weeks in Thailand before his passport turned up. (I know it could've been worse places but he was working)

I was told years ago that you can travel on a photo copy of your first passport page incase of emergencys abroad is this correct I've never witnessed or heard first hand experiences just whispers amongst colleagues.

Although recommended I've never carried a photo copy.

Regarding African officials they either don't give a hoot or a the most jobs-worth people on earth I resent every journey and encouter and I've had the fortunate of a year of travelling thru Angola.

I carry scans of various documents like insurance, V5, etc in my phone and kindle, but it's never occurred to me to have a copy of my passport.

Might be useful in an EU country, but in most other places they'll look for your entry/visa stamp in the passport to cancel it before you leave - I imagine you'd be in for a world of hurt when it appears you're trying to leave a country you haven't officially entered........

I'll second the second passport biggrin - as a seafarer, it allows me to travel outside the UK on my leave while my employer can take the other one to sort out work visas if required.

its perfectly legal to carry two passports. i've been asked by immigration a couple of times if i have my other PP with me and then asked to show it. its not like they're in two different names!

i've only ever had an issue in curacao as i gave them the wrong one by mistake, as they have a lot of problems with south americans coming in on stolen passports who then transit on to europe. they thought i had a duplicate but after checking the serial nos. they were happy.

anyway, back to the gadgets!

Depends on the hotel(s) you are going to. I found that the 5* hotels tended to have a multi plug socket so no adapters required, whereas the more back packer hotels required an adapter.
