We did Mark Warner in Praia De Luz (sp?!) in September for the first time (not with MW but in Portugal with them) and it was the first time I have ever said I would consider going back to the same resort.

The apartments are spread out amongst the village, the beach is a great mix of sand and rock pools, the food was excellent in resort, and out.

Activities were prolific and overall atmosphere was relaxed.

Oh and our child didn't disappear which is always a bonus.

Have a look at Cascais about 20km along the coast from Lisbon

Hotel Baia on the seafront, cheap.. Or Penha Longa resort, £££ overlooking Estoril racing circuit.
Estoril.. Casino, sea, small towns / cities, motor racing, plenty of history, golf courses galore.. Great food and some nice tucked away bars in Cascais.
Day trip into Lisbon on the train..
A trip up the coast to Prai del Ray.. Great drive through the cork tree forests.
Another trip through Lisbon, south over the bridge to the Setubal area. Sesimbra will get you some fantastic sea food.

I've been to this area several times, for all of the above. Would highly recommend it.

West Coast is much quieter than the Algarve. The south east corner of the Algarve (Portimao down to Sagres) is quieter and more quaint than Albefeira/Vilamoura etc.

Very good friends of mine own a gorgeous guest house just outside the fishing village of Burgau for that rustic charm and a relaxed offering between a private villa and boutique hotel

Been to Praia de luz three times. Used to go to Sagres for the day as a lovely quiet beach and nice restaurant for lunch.
