I am currently in the panelling process of my build having recevied my chassis earlier this year.

I noticed what appeared to be a rust like substance where the square chassis member (the square tube that supports the luggage container lid) and the round side chassis tube meet.

Initially I just put it down to dirt being trapped in the small gap. However, it has definitely developed and is actually rust.

The factory have stated that it is perfectly normal in this area and that I should simply apply some Kurust
and then seal.

Before attempting to resolve this issue I just wanted to gather others' opinions and experiences of
curing this issue.

Have many other builders experienced this problem or have I just been unlucky?

If so what is the best cure?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well guess what, I had the same problem in the same place on both sides. Treated with some rust inhibitor and black paint. Good as new.

Mine the same. Nothing to worry about in my view. As the build goes on you will visit each part of the car and know it so well etc. Mine has been Sikaflex'd WD 40 every crevice and pretty sure it is still spot on. Often it can also be weld splatter, swarf from your own work etc.

Thanks for the confirmation chaps. I have ordered some rust remover. I guess it's not going to get significantly worse in the next week or so? Should I paint over once rust has been transformed?

I'm guessing it's just a bit of surface rust where the powder coating hasn't reached for whatever reason. I would have thought it's not going to get much worse in the space of a couple of weeks, and should be fine to paint over once treated.

I'd be interested in how good a match paint is for the powder coat, and if there was a particular paint which people had used and had been pleased with the outcome.

Hope that's not too much of a thread hijack!

When I was busy building I took the opportunity to inject Waxoyl through some of the many rivet holes into as many parts of the chassis as I could. I suspect there was probably a few kg in there at the start, over the years it has some has seeped out (mostly onto the garage floor).

pretty sure there not much chance of any rust in there....

Hello Folks, here is my experience.

I am currently building for me this time my GTR, it is a long long process has the engine will be special and require modification.

During 5 year the chassis was in the garage and develop some surface rust where powder coating could not" find" after only 2 months...

So i coated with Waxoil all these area (especially front dampers reinforcement)and after 5 year i would curious to see what happen below waxoil, the rust was inhibited.

NO WORRIES about that, but only one spray of Waxoil is not enough for the entire car.

Thanks to everyone's feedback and reassurance.

I've got at another 16 months before I order the body. So I guess this will allow any other none powder coated areas to reveal themselves!

Can anyone recommend a good protective black paint to go over the treated areas?

I very much doubt there will be any rust on open panels so the best way to treat cracks which have missed coating is to first use a rust treatment (curerust etc) then fill the crack with a fillet of PU sealant.
The build manual already says the seams where the floor pan meets the chassis tubes should be sealed with PU from both above and below.

Thanks for the reminder, I skipped that one.
