Hi
I bought a second glass ECU for my 2011 vantage. I swapped the innards from my old plastic one to the new key. It opens and locks the doors etc.. But when it's inserted into the dash I get a key error when I try to start it. Anyone any ideas? I'm at a bit of a loss as it's a single pcb board and if it opens/closes doors it should start the car?

Thanks in advance.

It's not as simple as that
The ignition is coded to the key to prevent theft

Inside the old plastic key would have been a small bit of metal that looks like it could be a magnet. This is in fact the immobiliser transponder. You can free it by breaking the adhesive contact by twisting the plastic casing back and forth. You need to replace this for the one in the innards of the glass ECU as well as the PCB. Once you have swapped this over it will work just fine.

Thanks Glyn, I had just done that when I read your post. I was looking at the old plastic key and noticed the serial number on the piece of ferrite. I swapped them over and it did work perfectly after that.

Where did you get your glass key from? I have been looking at these on ebay and they are generally over £300 which is a bit steep as I just want the case.

Got it off eBay, it was second hand but as new. The seller had no codes for it which was fine as I only wanted the outer parts.

I saw it for sale. Did it go for around £200? I only use my plastic one as the glass one is overly heavy and just annoying to have to take care of. Plastic one can be dropped, put in a pocket with other keys or change, thrown on the side, etc.

Nick that looks sweet. Is it just a carbon fibre wrap? Like the 3M stuff you can get online?

Cheers

Chris.

Cheers Nick. Will do. Worst case, I'm going the cheap route. I'm not sure I could make the plastic key look any more than it already is wink

The CF cover does look very good, I'd definately go for one of those if anyone identifies where they can be made.

I've managed to get a glass key at a reasonable price so will upgrade the bits from my plastic key to that so won't be going the carbon route but I did get a response from Mike in case anyone is still interested...

"Yes, I do have a couple left.
However, as I have sold my Aston, I do not have any means of "tuning" them.
They are all ready to be fitted with the internals of the plastic keys but there is always a little bit of fiddling to do to make sure all the buttons work and the case fits correctly. This can be a little time consuming so I only did it for the number of cases sold...
If you are not afraid of getting hands on, and you are interested let me know."

Mike can be contacted via his profile

Good news on both fronts. Just to add the CF unit is significantly lighter than the glass one. Evidently swapping the bits form the plastic one to the CF one is easy, well that's what "Cockernee" told me biglaugh

And you listened to him hehe
Next he will be telling you he needs to test drive the DB9 to make sure it is OK and hence make both your Astons worthless wink
