I'm living in Poole Dorset at the moment but want to move closer to my parents and those of Mrs Garyhun.

We want to be about 1-1.5 hours north of High Wycombe (my parents are in Gt Missenden and the other set are in Yorkshire)

Where would someone suggest we do some looking around? We like nice restaurants and pubs, long walks and being close to a decent town or city (10-15 minute drive would be ideal). We have no kids to worry about and work is not an issue either. Ideally somewhere that's got a little character and no chavs would be perfect smile

Cheers
Gary

We have similar circumstances to you as we have relatives in St. Albans and North Yorkshire.

We live in the Loughborough area which has enough coutryside, good access to the M1 and you can be in Leicester or Nottingham within 15 - 20 minutes.

In this area I would look at:
Woodhouse Eaves
Quorn
Rothley
Melbourne

These places seem to have the right combination of countryside, civilisation and community.

There's some very nice, chav-free villages south of Notts.

These are all on the south Notts / north Leics border.
Some have great pubs and restuarants, some don't have either but that sometimes adds to the charm of the village.

All with good road links to the A46, A60 and ultimately the M1.
Within 15 mins of Nottingham, Leicester, Loughborough but countrified enough to be able to walk for miles off road.

Rempstone
Costock
Wysall
Widmerpool
Willoughby on the Wolds
Bunny

I live in one of the above, we have no shop, no pub but it's a great place to live.
Been here 10 years and have two kids, so lack of facilities haven't impacted us negatively as just 2 miles away is a large village with everything you need.

Good luck with the search!

I am biased but I'd suggest somewhere close to the A1 such as Oakham or Stamford, both full of character and main cities not too far away.
Lots of countyside and Rutland Water for your long walks.
Also good train links north & south from Peterborough, or Leicester.

The above are also very nice places to live.

I guess it depends a lot on budget, as most of the places listed ain't exactly cheap anymore!
(But then neither is Poole... )

Many thanks both of you.

We're planning spending the next 6 months touring around so this will really help.

I grew up in Rothley and while it is nice the house prices are expensive, likewise Quorn and Woodhouse.

Rothley though is skewed somewhat because of the Ridgeway,Ridings,Swithland Lane lot.

I've always liked Rutland Water. Our first trip in 2015 is Oakham and we will go from there.

South & East Leicestershire OP.

I live in Kibworth, which is 8 miles south of Leicester on the A6. Lots of character close to stunning countryside heading out in to the Caudle hills. Market Harborough train station is 7 miles away and takes 51 mins to St Pancras.

Leicester is excellent for shopping and has plenty of good restaurants. As well as other attractions like the Rchard lll exhibition, National Space Centre, Bradgate Contry Park amongst others. It's also excellent culturally which the De Montfort Hall venue, Curve as well as other venues.

I came to Leicestershire from London 16 years ago, it's the best decision I've made. When I arrived Leicester was on its adze now all these years later the investment that has been made is truly beginning to pay off.
