E39 Window Regulator Replacement

The drivers window on my 1998 520i is stuck in the fully up position. I can hear the relay click when I press the button but it doesn't budge.
I'm up for fixing it myself but all the guides I've found say the window either has to be fully or at least partially down in order to change the regulator, has anyone managed to carry out the repair with the window fully up?
