Keep hearing this banded about..

Do you automatically become one once hitting middle-age ? ( 35-60) or whatever the range is now..

It's certainly an odd one ... but it seems to be used loads of late, bit like Chav was used for anyone wearing a colourful hat and young ha ha.

"Middle Aged Man In Lycra"

Derogatory term for people who dress like they're in the Tour de France but cycle round the corner to work, from what I can gather.

doesnt seem to matter that you have been cycling for the past twenty years or so, the moment you step out in lycra and ride a bike aged 35 or over, you are seemingly judged by everyone else as a MAMIL who only started riding a bike in August 2012 because that Christopher Biggins fella won a race or something in France....

I cant believe you can buy things like this....

I never understand what the issue its?

Are you middle aged? yes
Do you wear lycra? yes

So you are a middle aged man in lycra? Why is that offensive?

I don't mind the term. I mind the (mis) association, with the ex-golfing, lard arsed (normally) numpty, that the term 'mamil' has come to represent.

It seems to be mainly aimed overweight middle age men in lycra, so should be changed to FMAMIL or OMAMIL.

I think its the implication that teh hobby was taken up as some sort of mid life crisis.... like no one ever cycled before 2012...

That's about right. I've cycled since I was about 5 years old, cycling used to be seen as a bit of a quirky hobby, done by mechanically minded, mechanically competent, slightly eccentric people. Sadly, the FPKW wiggo wannabe brigade have changed that of late.

What about wearing socks with a lycra weave, but zero bike. Are you then a Mamil?

Seems ill thought out this.

What a about a bloke in cotton or nylon on a bike? ( or no bike )

Middle aged man in cotton?

Madness.

TBH, that about sums me up! Loved cycling as a boy, stopped aged 12, went to uni, drank too much, bagged a hottie wife, let myself go, had 3 kids, got fat, started running, hurt my knees, started watching le tour, got inspired by wiggo, bought a bike, lost 3 stone, bought 2 more bikes, now can't stop thinking about cycling. oh and buying new lycra and bike bits...annoys the wife, but hey, it could have been a proper midlife crisis involving buying a porsche or having an affair!!!

I'm proud to be a mamil :-)

Yeah those fat middle aged male cyclists in lycra are giving all the established middle aged male cyclists in lycra a bad name. hehe

Newsflash. Most normal people think blokes in lycra look ridiculous. Did you see the 2015 blokes in lycra with bikes calendar? No?

It's just that as more people are cycling, the amount of females with partners wearing cycling gear has reached a critical mass and now there's actually a name for it.

I don't get why this is a problem! If they have money and are spending on a sport they enjoy then what does it matter what they're wearing. If they're a "fpkw" they'll at least be comfy as can be in proper sport kit suited to the job. Are guys playing football in the park in their fav clubs strip also "FPKW'ers?" Better than them sitting at home getting fat!

IMO comments like that are no better than the whole MAMIL thing.

Just did an hour in the Tuck on the Rack at just below race-pace , i reckon that would have killed off all these Mamil's LOL.

At that pain level the last thing i was bothered about was some sad case pointing out i was wearing the correct gear for my sport biggrin

Funny how cycling is now a sport . I've always cycled for convenience to the station or the shops, as do 90%+ cyclists in the world I guess! not a sport but cheap transport ..

It's the 'mid-life crisis' thing in general that irks me. Usually uttered by people for whom 'living' ended after breeding. More often than not (in my experience) by women. Whether it's cycling or something else, having a hobby is a great thing. Particularly one that involves being outside, socialising and some exercise.

I'd confine both the term MAMIL and the judgemental rules of Velominati to Room 101.

We should all just get on with enjoying cycling, whether it be for fun or for competition.
