A auto 4x4 to use as a tow car.
Discussion
Autos of old (eg. 3 speed Ford Granadas) were no good for towing as they would overheat the gearbox oil.
Modern autos in big 4x4's are built for towing and have the neccessary cooling as standard. I used to tow with a manual VW passat but now have an auto Merc ML, not a chance would I go back to towing with a manual.

Ive towed with 2 autos (range rover 2.5td, rover 75 2.0 auto) and no issues, back to a manual at the moment, would rather an auto though.
I only know of one situation where towing was damaging to a 5 series. 535d, with aftermarket towbar, overheated the autobox all the time when towing. When questioned with BMW, it was because factory fitted towbars gave the autobox and extra oil cooler, whereas aftermarket didn't. Kinda made sense

Not necessarily. My mate is an Auto Specialist and fits loads of after market trans coolers to cars that tow (usually after he's reconditioned their damaged gearbox)
