Inlet port shut off motor (sits below turbo) is a known problem causing vehicle to go into limp home mode. It gets covered in an oil mist that escapes out of the red seal that locates the charge air pipe onto the turbo. It can be seen if you lift up the top engine cover & look at the turbo in the middle at the back.
Turbos can also be a problem as the variable vanes stick causing the vehicle to go into limp home mode & in early 642 V6 diesel engines exhaust manifolds were known to break up internally & then the parts would get sucked through the turbo & damage the impeller blades.
7 speed auto box can suffer from various problems, harsh gear changes, loss of drive but generally these faults are all down to lack of maintenance.
Just check it has god service history & if possible check Warranty work history. Remember this is a car that has computers that control everything & they all occasionally need software updates etc.
It is a good car & in my view if looked after properly will give you very few problems.

I've just brought a e280 which I think is the same engine- 2007 with 65 k on the clock, went into limp mode the day I collected it. Has now gone back to the dealer to have the port inlet motor replaced due to oil seeping through the seal.
My first ever Merc and, despite this hiccup, I absolutely love it!

Did you buy your car from a dealership and therefore have a warranty to fall back on? Mine wouldn't have any of that support :/My first ever Merc and, despite this hiccup, I absolutely love it!
