Seen one if these locally for shed money, considering picking it up as a bit of a novelty as its so cheap, and will no doubt be an easier commute than my Impreza.

Before I do the need, is there anything specific on the mk3 or vr6 engine beyond the usual stuff I need to look at? I know mk3s can suffer from real bad rot on the arches/sills but is there owt else?

If it's a pre-96, chain gear wear can be quite bad. The upper tensioner falls to bits causing the chain to rattle and potentially jump a tooth if it back fires.

Other than that, it's a Golf, so p1ss easy to work on and pretty reliable. Chassis will feel pretty tired at this age and could do with a bush refresh, but if it's just a cheap heap, then just drive it until it drops.

On top of Supercharged's comments, I would not expect the word "economy" to feature as one of its good points. Expect low MPG. Misfires under load (ignition), rotten PAS pipes, general age related issues such as oil leaks (pressure switch/cooler), coolant pumps (impeller), rear bushes etc are places to check before purchase.

Used to get 36mpg on a (slow) run when I commuted in a Corrado VR6, so can be a lot better than internet folklore would have you believe.

WOW never seen that high.

The auto will no doubt harm the economy even more so if you can manage mid 20s you are doing well.

On a mk3 id be more concerned about rust than the engine/drivetrain. The sills, the strut tops, around the windscreen, under the rear lights (check the boot floor for signs of moisture) are all far worse areas.
