Roads around Durham
Discussion
I live in Durham and when I fancy a little drive out I always enjoy this road. Barnard Castle is a nice place to stop for something to eat.

This one is one of my favorites when I head across to the lakes.

Make sure you do the section of B6277 between Forest-in-Teesdale and Alston, awesome. Then head towards Haydon Bridge on the A686. Various options to cut across to the B6306 at Blanchland either across the top via Hexham or criss-crossing the moors via Thornley Gate, Coalcleugh, Allenheads and Rookhope. They're all good, smooth roads because they were built to service the local quarrying industry.
From Blanchland head south through Edmundbyers, Stanhope and Eggleston - all of that stretch is fantastic.
Have fun, be safe.

Can definitely recommend the roads around Barnard Castle also. Look out for Tan Hill while you're in that area, fantastic road up there and meant to be a nice pub as well.
Best way to the Tan Hill Inn is via Stang Top.Mostro said:

I always use as many of these roads as possible for a warm up when going to/from the Highlands.
Thanks guys. Did the A689 to Alston then the B6277 to Barnard Castle - cracking road!
V bad RTA on the 689 which entailed a insterestingndetour whilst the fire and police services attended, hope those involved are ok.
Lovely cafe "chatterbox" at St John Chapel - can thoroughly recommend
