On a new 2 x 10 or 11 chain set do you still have to avoid over stressing the chain by avoiding running from the small front to the small rear or the big front to the largest rear? On my oldest bike it was always recommended to do this to prevent the chain breaking or wearing out to quickly.

Yes. Even more so than before.

(And chainrings on the front, sprockets on the back wink)

I frequently use big-big combination as changing chainrings is a pain when your pressing on in a fast group. Can't say I've ever experienced any issues!

Must admit I've set mine up similarly to do the same (9 and 10 speed) 50x28t is low enough for climbing. Never small-small though, that's just silly!

I do expect it to cause wear though, but I change chains and cassettes routinely each year anyway.
