With a bit of man maths and barring no overseas postings, I'll shortly be thinking about upgrading the Box to a newer model. Budget will be hovering around the £18-20k mark and the car's a daily.

Whilst I love the Box, the daily practicality and refinement of a fixed-roof is calling. So for my budget, I'd be looking at a (hopefully Gen 2) Cayman S, 996 Carrera 4S or early 997 C2 or C2S. Leaning towards the 911 - illusion of more space because of the +2 perches, and the draw of the rear-engine platform after playing in the mid-engine Boxster for the past while; but understand the spectre of the IMS and bore score will abound 996 and 997.1s.

Essentially, what I'm asking the forum for is a little run down of where you'd park your cash and why; if anyone has gone through a similar dilemma, or could point to resources on the web of reviews, information, viewpoints, critiques and things to be aware of.

There is not much of a difference in terms of practicality between the 996 and 997. Also a 60k miler 997 may need a refresh whereas a 80k 996 may have just had a serious overhaul. My money would go on an early 996 C2 with a Hartech engine (if you can find one). You may find one for £12-14K, saving you upto £8k from your budget. This is of course if the newer aspect of your post is not the most important factor in your decision for buying your next car.

Agree but feel 997 looks so much nicer...

£20k will just about get you into a 996 Turbo?

Otherwise a 997 would be the choice.

Wait until you have bit more cash and buy a 996 turbo. You won't want another Porsche after driving one. Try all of them first then decide. You already have lovely Porsche so worth driving all of them.

I doubt it is easy to buy a good 997 for £18-£20k.

More like £23k and that is private with zero warranty.

Left field choice 928? Perhaps the best GT car made throughout 80's, buy the right one and it seems it may well be a solid investment as well.

Another vote for a 928 or something like an sc . Easy enough to work on yourself , a real event to drive at any time or pace and it will cost you nothing .
I fact I'll wager you will make a few quid when you sell it .
If you sell it

Now, that is something. Slightly over budget, but I'm sure they are out there in my price range.

I love the old front-engined stuff, and the 928 is a particular squeeze of mine. However, having had experience of running a 944 daily, I don't think I could bring myself to run a classic again on such a regular basis - the running costs of the V8 would be pretty high, plus given their age, it's not just consumables that would be needing replaced to guarantee reliability.

I've read some great suggestions, but this is what I'm after - something dependable, reliable and a bit fresher than the Box I've got just now.

Go see it. If it is good, offer your limit. They can only say no.

Not any more. This time last year it would have. Cheapest jackanory cars and high mile autos are now all over 20, decent manuals 24-35.

Amber indicator 996 3.4 is cooler than a 997.1. Discuss..
