I've been considering one of these for a while and finally went to see one in the flesh today. It's a very nice watch, I like the retro feel to it, but I don't really like the reptile effect leather strap, it was a bit too shiney!

So I could get the Tissot and change the strap to a nicer brown leather one, but just wondered if there are any similar looking watches I should consider, budget up to about a grand. I tried on a lovely Oris, but at £1,300 it's a bit more than I want to pay.

The Tissot - £395

Oris Artelier Small Second Pointer Day Date - sadly over budget

Oris Artelier Date - cheaper alternative at about £850 but not seen it yet.

I have the stainless visodate as above, it is a lovely thing, especially for the price.

I agree about the strap though, it still creaks but I have not found a decent replacement yet.

The Tissot is very nice. I've had one for two years. Don't think the other more expensive models you posted look as good.

One alternative you might want to look at is http://www.creationwatches.com/products/index.php?...

Lovely blue dial and a bit cheaper.

The Visodate is a very nice watch for the money. You can do a little better. The Hamilton Intra matic is a similar style, yet it has that feels twice the watch that the Tissot is. And if you realise that the Tissot already punches above it's weight...

Last time I checked these were about £620 on the high street. You'll do a lot better on line. Personally I think that the 38mm is nicer. The 42mm is sized like a modern watch, yet fashioned like a vintage, I don't think this combination works.

Damn, that Hamilton is REALLY nice!

I find myself wondering why Hamilton doesn't get more attention. By all accounts, they are great watches, and they've got the historical provenance.

That Hamilton is very nice, but in the end decided to get the Visodate, got Goldsmiths to knock off £45 so girlfriend bought it for me, and at £350 I think it's a bit of a bargain. Will put that saving towards a new strap at some point, although actually happier with the standard strap than I thought I would be.

Good choice!

Just one question tho; I thought you had an internal clock, accurate to about +/- 5 mins? Why wear a watch?!

You are right, I have no need for a watch wink it's just for style haha

Go on, treat yourself to the mesh version.

I have the Gold colour version, and was thinking of getting a gold mesh for it.

Mike, I agree. Though I'd add that an Orient Star feels twice the watch that the Hamilton is. I haven't spotted many watches under £1-2k that can hold a candle to most Orient Stars in terms of attention to detail, fit and finish. (The only downsides to the Orient Star range are the box and leather strap, IME, but you don't wear the box and a strap's easily changed.) If it wasn't too late, I'd have suggested the OP consider one of the Orient Star Classic or Orient Star Standard Date ranges.
