Have stripped a load of rank wallpaper from bathroom and kitchen and underneath it's a bit rutted and scored etc, I.e if I paint it now it will look st. Is it just a plasterer who will come and make the walls smooth and ready to paint without having to use wallpaper? I read the plastering thread and all the talk of plasterboard has made me wonder as these are old Victorian walls...

Noob question probably! Sorry!

You need a plasterer. He will assess what you have. If it's basically sound a reskim will suffice.

Tap the wall with your knuckle on the plaster in various places. Does it sound hollow anywhere? If so a bit of remedial work might be necessary before skimming.

Got a pic?

A plasterer may be able to skim over what is there - or if not just stick on some plasterboard and plaster over that - you may even be able to paint onto new plasterboard if you use the tape and fill method.

How old is the house? It might be lime plaster/render.

Thanks guys!

No pic, but I'll try to take one.

Yes the house is 1910 or something, but sounds like the chap above had similar. I will find a local guy

Lath and plaster. (I'd have thought at least the plaster bit would be obvious smile ).

A plater is a person who puts food on plates! (I note the chef connection)

As for the rest, he's 'avin' a larth!

Aye. Lettings, you don't need to know anything about DIY though.
