Got a subaru impreza mainly for trackdays but is my daily for. a month it has a bigger aluminum rad on when the fans kick in they stay in for a long time until the car temp is back down to cold was thinking of disconnecting one of the fans or covering half the rad with cardboard as a quick fix as have no time to investigate and coming hop to Christmas probably can't get parts Will this be ok? also found out there is two small holes drilled in the plate in the thermostat is that ok? Cheers for any response

Thermostat needs replaced, it's leaking, stuck open or both. It's a dirt cheap part, and should be easy got locally.

DO NOT block the radiator.

Maybe. Your average decent car parts place should stock them, if not try a subaru dealership. You should have monday/tuesday to get it, but a lot of placed will be closed up already.

As an idea of price, they're 16 quid or so for a genuine one online (could be cheaper, I only checked one place) so anything around the £20 mark would be an okay price locally.

Given that you're already aware that there's holes in the current thermostat, I take it you know what's involved with replacing it?

Agreed, the thermostat is a known problem with Impreza's.

It's a cheap part worth replacing every few years.
