There used to be a Japanese Cafe just up the road from St. Pancras station. It was always full of office girls and salarymen from local Jap businesses. Good simple food and banter. I even took my Mum there, she'd never eaten sushi before. She loved it.

As above, you can't go wrong with Zuma. Shiori also great but as I recall it's a set menu only. Sushi Tetsu is fantastic if you can get in, and I love Jin Kichi in Hampstead, Sushi Say in Willesden and Café Japan in Golders Green for great local options.

Avoid as if your life depends on it, newcomer The Araki. The biggest rip-off I have ever experienced in decades of spending money getting fat in London.

Sushi Tetsu is a great shout. Forgot about that.

Nambu Tei near Baker Street/Marylebone is well worth a trip - it's also far closer to 'classical' Japanese fair than the modern interpretations at the big names. I've got a feeling it might also be the first Japanese restaurant to open in London.

Shoryu for great, great ramen. There's one just off Picadilly Circus, great Kotteri Hakata Tonkotsu with cocktails, then off to the Japan Centre for some shopping!
