Ha I thought the same thing when I first read it but the details didn't stack up. The 'real' Joe Lewis has paintings worth more than this clowns scam! Who puts their money with these people? Amazing

An aquaintance of mine is serving 13 years for an £86m fraud. He is, without a doubt, one of the most charming, charismatic people I've ever met.

I think I may know who that is, an acquaintance of mine took an investment from his company. It didn't end well.

the simple fact is no matter how you dress any of this ste up it is no better than taking a punt at ladbrokes, and that includes all the "top" city traders. it is no more than gambling ,i have no sympathy for anyone that loses money in this way.
most people realise how hard they had to work to save the sums they invest ,yet think there is something magical about some smooth talking wker that promises to make them a fortune while they are sitting on their arse doing nothing.

In all seriousness. These schemes rely ilon the inherent greed of the investors. They seem to believe that they can beat the system. That there is a Father Christmas who will shower untold riches upon them.

Mugs.

smile Hence, he got away with it for quite a while - like serial killers don't look like murderers.

Interesting - how does one become a top trader? Are they just lucky that their choices paid off, or is there some inherent skill involved in researching and choosing which investments to go for, and when to trade? Is there some kind of 'trader ability test' that you could carry out to determine which were the best traders, or are there any qualifications/certifications for tradering, similar to professions like architecture, IT and medicine?

The only people who lost money were ordinary people who got scammed by a con man. What has this got to do with 'top city traders'?

Seems to be a theme in the city, look at the threads blaming the victims of miss-selling for being greedy and getting compensation. Certain areas of finance seem to delight in making products extremely complex and then blaming punters for not understanding them.
