I have a 1999 Honda Accord 2 Litre Automatic.

I was driving today to a few places (lots of stop and start) when I did my last start up for the trip home I noticed that it seemed to be struggling and sounding as if it was going to cut out with very low revs but was fine after driving a few metres and idled fine everytime I had to stop on the trip home.

I was only home for about 30 minutes before having to drive my wife to work and when I went to start the car it started fine and then immediately cut out, I managed to get it going by revving the engine a little on start up and the car acted fine after driving a few metres but noticed during my drive that the temperature gauge was close to the red line.

I have since checked all the fluids in the car and they are all ok with no signs of leaks and both the oil and coolant look clean.

Any idea what the issue might be? thermostat or radiator cap maybe?

Any help would be much appreciated, hopefully it wont be too much of an unwanted expense just before christmas.

Many Thanks,
Adam

Run the car will heating on full to see if it drops the temperature down. Although unlikely, check to see if there's any white gunk on the underside of the oil cap, could mean headgasket is gone. Most likely it's the thermostat. You can whip it off if it's located handily, and check if it operates correctly by putting it in hot water and see if it opens.

If it's anyway slow to open you may as we'll replace it. Youtube videos are always a good reference to see their actual operation. Good luck with diagnosis!!
