AMG, Affalterbach Factory Visit

As part of my yearly pilgrimage to the Essen Tuning show, I always try to add a bit extra on, and this year it was to the spiritual home of a couple of my cars 
So, contact was made, visit time and date agreed, and after flying in to Dusseldorf and driving to Frankfurt on the Monday evening day one of the road trip arrived.
Up at a sensible time, it was a relatively short drive from Frankfurt to Affalterbach.
On travelling through the town of Affalterbach, I was convinced that we had the wrong Affalterbach, but we turned down a narrow road to be greeted by the industrial estate now taken over by AMG!
We were a little bit early, so had a quick look around the area, spotting the workshops of HWR who look after the AMG GT Racers for Merc/AMG
There were one or two new shells waiting to be converted in to race cars!
We also spotted a couple of new GTs complete with disguise stickers in a secure car park area.
We then headed to the visitor centre, where they had even put the flags out for us!
We were free to have a look and play with the cars in the visitor centre before we met our host for the morning.
Our host give us a history of AMG and how they came to be located in Affalterbach, then she took us to the workshops where the magic still happens, subject to having very deep pockets!
Unfortunately, photos were strictly forbidden, but they had some nice AMG motors in, including this.
That is a rhd W140 S Class estate, complete with an AMG fettled 7.3L V12, and the best wit was there was another one parked further inside the workshops!
There were the expected CLK Black series, SLs, the new A45 and a UK registered CLK DTM, back for a service!
We could have a close look at everything, but not allowed to touch...
We were shown the special interior room, where you could choose any colour you want for your your interior trim, whether tasteful or not!
After that it was off to one of four engine dyno rooms, where a V8 turbo motor was currently on test.
It was interesting to find out that the power generated by the engine was used to provide electricity to two offices within the complex, the heat from the engine used to heat the buildings, and the exhaust gasses also used in power generation.
So environmentally friendly V8s!
We were then taken to one of the engine building facilities, where it is still one man one engine on the production line!
It was amazing to see brand new pristine engines being assembled, the equipment there simply incredible.
Computer controlled torque wrenches, electronic engine stands, the whole works.
There were also a number of pother AMG engines on display, including the famous Hammer quad cam V8 and the new Pagani V12
After the engine build area, it was back to the reception area for a well earned cuppa.
Nice attention to detail there as well
When it was time to leave, I managed a couple more photos...
So thank you AMG for your hospitality, next on the list was the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart.....
