We have found a nice place in Pontefract, close to the countryside. It seems a decent market town- is it?

There's nothing wrong with Ponty but on a plus side, it's 15 mins from Leeds, 20 from Doncaster and easy reach for transport links such as train to London takes just over 90 mins from Donny. Absolutely no complaints this end.

The haribo factory is based there so it must be a fun, happy place to live!

It did seem ok- better than Wakefield we thought. I am sure that there are some not so nice areas but it certainly felt very safe.

Wakefield centre is marginally better than Bradford.

Don't know much about Ponty but another option around there is Woodlesford. Mate lives out there and its nice with good transport links.

Where abouts in Ponte? Same as anywhere really, there are some really nice parts and others that are dog-rough. If you're near the countryside I would guess you're on the Larkshill/Ackworth/Carelton end which is one of the nicer parts.

Which area is considered rough?

Barracks is fairly rough, if you head nearer the town centre there are parts of Baghill, Chequerfield, Nevison that most would consider rough. Certainly heading out towards Knottingley/Airedale there are a few estates that are considered 'edgey' at best. In most cases it only takes being a few streets away to have a completely different experience of the town and not see much bother.

Sir John Betjeman wrote about it :

The Licorice Fields At Pontefract

In the licorice fields at Pontefract
My love and I did meet
And many a burdened licorice bush
Was blooming round our feet;
Red hair she had and golden skin,
Her sulky lips were shaped for sin,
Her sturdy legs were flannel-slack'd
The strongest legs in Pontefract.

The light and dangling licorice flowers
Gave off the sweetest smells;
From various black Victorian towers
The Sunday evening bells
Came pealing over dales and hills
And tanneries and silent mills
And lowly streets where country stops
And little shuttered corner shops.

She cast her blazing eyes on me
And plucked a licorice leaf;
I was her captive slave and she
My red-haired robber chief.
Oh love! for love I could not speak,
It left me winded, wilting, weak,
And held in brown arms strong and bare
And wound with flaming ropes of hair.

I don`t think there are more than a few licorice plants here and there now, but the scent still drifts over parts of the town from the factory. I think there are still quite a few lasses who would have this effect on you!

Market town…. not really. But you have a decent access to Wakefield/leeds/doncaster/york and only an hours drive from Manchester.

Excellent! We're hoping for this next year too (the baby, not the VX220).

It's on Pontefract road- so the not so nice area by the sounds of it. But from what we've seen recently- it almost seemed posh!

I think 3 of the roads into Ponte are called Pontefract Road, what's the postcode?

I'd go for the VX220 instead tbh ha

Have you looked around the Robin Hood area? I have a mate that lives there and it seems good value for money and easy access to Leeds centre.

WF3 postcode is Robin Hood

That Pontefract lane is the border between Ponte and Ferrybridge, don't think its too rough, but I would suggest large groups of kids in track suits would be the norm however any large estate of ex- council houses is going to be the same round here.

Plus side is big houses, big gardens and good value

Thing is though how rough? I mean the areas in leeds we've seen (Gipton, Harehills, Seacroft) are really bad. I'm sure nothing in Pontefract is anywhere in that league surely?
