If we manage to reverse planet Earths warmimg, how will we know when to stop? Will they announce it on the 6:00pm news one day ? And what exactly will each of us have do? Will the local council issue advance 'stop the planet warmimg kits' for us to deploy ? Maybe we could all start our car engines, and rev the b*****s out of them for an hour or so. Or chop a tree down. Start digging up coal, and setting light to it? Drill for more oil in our back gardens?

There's no reason not to have some water vapour in air at and below freezing, and liquid water can and does exist below zero deg C too (supercooling, clouds, freezing fog). Some water vapour will arise from sublimation of ice. The 'concentration' will be low at and around 0 deg C and not a lot below about -40 deg C.

The point about 50% or 70% of saturation level (say) is right enough but there's still the apparent curiosity of having either liquid or vapour below freezing point which I took to be the hub of the question.

Clearly 70% of potentially a lot is more than 70% of bugger all - it is indeed all relative and flagpolers will find it's a bit different to stepping off the aircraft at BKK

I take the point. The 'possible' or 'potential' water bearing capacity at such low temperatures is
very low, so any odd molecules will carry a disproportionate amount of weight on the RH scale. This occurred to me when I recalled being in transit at Anchorage airport in January 1975 and feeling as if the moisture was being sucked out of me by the dry atmosphere, and experiencing massive static discharges from anything conductive in the airport buildings.

Deary me. That extreme weather you encountered and those shocks in the airport were obviously due to global warming. How could you miss that?!

Yes, and meeting a dead polar bear in a glass case in the transit lounge!

seems to have reduced somewhat for next winter since I last looked at it with any interest a few weeks ago.

This may not be the whole picture for total availability (either up or down) and I don't think it would include figures for STOR (for example) but things do look a little marginal for next winter.

If I understand correctly the numbers include the full assessed metered output of "renewables".

So, the predicted surplus for December/Jan (excluding the Xmas/New Year shutdown period) is circa 7 to 8.6 MW. The metered potential for Wind - the major renewable "asset" - is a little over 8.4MW. But it is rare to see any numbers suggesting more than half that output being recorded. In fact in Januaries very often the figure produced can be indistinguishable from zero for days at a time.

It will be interesting to see how it all works out.

I can confirm it's so hot it's a joke... It's half past 11pm here, 33 degrees and 80pc humidity. I sweat buckets just walking to the car... And it's only going to get hotter before the monsoon. My AC is running full blast all night and struggles to get below 24. It's too much.

The local commercial radio news caught my ear this morning at the point where 'ice sheet' was mentioned, apparently nothing was melting until 2009 then 'trillions of metres' melted. Square? Cubic? In one go? In total since? It made little sense but I doubt it was meant to.
