Joe - Ye, they were over half the weight of the original parts. My aim is get into the kumho cup, so I can't really go up in power as that would move me up in class, so I'm going down to the minimum weight instead.
Cheer, but did they make any difference on the track.. Im am thinking the same to offset the cage, and attempt to lower the center of gravity, but not sure if spending the cash will make any difference in the respect.

Cheers

I wasn't inferring a full blown diffuser. My old Alfa 155 had a rear under tray made from plastic that covered part of the tank and the recess behind it and the rear bumper in effect just smoothing out the air going out of the rear. I don't know about the rules for what you are preparing, might be worth a closer look at what specifically is not allowed. wink

Regarding the sump, its a sump from another car with some baffling going on, but it doesn't matter now you have a decent baffle for your sump. Just get someone with good skills to weld it in. I saw your welding remember....just saying tongue out

Nice car, I have an E36 as well and we have had oil issues on track with the car tapping a lot when we pull in from a session. Can you help me out with details on fitting an oil cooler please? I understand that you can use one from an M3, but I can't find the blog (f0xy?) that you mention and I'm struggling for a more details.

Here's my one on her first day out:

I've been around Castle Combe (without the rear headrests!) and running on a slightly thicker oil she's still getting too hot on track.

Well, i havnt updated in a while, but i have been progressing with the car. Quick shortlist of what has happened;

  • dual fuel pumps installed - 2 x m50 pumps fitted. passenger side pumps into drivers side to stop fuel surge (kit from bimmerworld)
  • sump baffle fitted - probably will never know if it works!
  • hard motorsport console delete fitted
  • starter button and ignition toggle fitted
  • battery cut off fitted (moved jump point junction to under the dash and used that. all cables were long enough, had to shorten main cable)
  • oil thermostat oil diverter valve so 100% of oil goes through cooler
  • fire extinguisher fitted and plumbed in
  • external cut offs fitted and plumbed in
  • camber shims fitted to front wheels to give more camber
  • brake ducts and ducting fitted (didn't have a single bit of fade on a full day on Donington GP)
  • team dynamics powder coated black
  • kumho Ecstas fitted (awesome tyre!)
  • vibra tech competition engine mounts fitted
  • decated
  • naca duct un rear passenger window with ducting, providing air into the car. Pop vent also fitted to drivers finder.
  • CAE shifter and shifter rod fitted (can't begin to describe how good it is...)
  • 3.91 diff (not used yet)
  • re-made radiator cowling as temps were a little high (i damaged and didnt refit my last one) (again, not used yet)

How she looks like inside.

Not to shabby.

Vents.

I've also now passed my ARDs test, just awaiting on my licence to come back (sent it off, but they wanted more information on an injury i sustained a few years back).

I also managed a full day at Doningon on the GP circuit, and the car worked flawlessly (apart from a few niggles that didnt really slow me).

https://youtu.be/pk3_6FrocDI - a few good laps from the day.

On the day, i realised my rev limit wasn't hitting the 7200, then remembered i hadn't connected my clocks to my ECU, so my ECU wasn't getting a speed signal (usually gets a signal from the ABS, which i no-longer have). My oil and water temps where a little high (they would settle at water - 110, oil 120). We were putting this down to me not having my cowling fitted (i've fitted a new one now before my next track day). I'm also now running just water and water wetter, so hopefully that should help.

So, my next day is this saturday at Castle Combe. Can't wait to test the new diff...

Joe, I would say they did make a difference, but i honestly can't be sure. I couldn't say wether it was a placebo effect or not... However, common-sense says it must have made a difference. Bringing the overall weigh of the car down and bringing that weight into the middle of the car MUST have made a difference...

Fantastic thread - I've really enjoyed reading this - keep it coming!

Well done on your lap times too - a 58 round the Indy circuit at brands is really good for what was a pretty standard car.

Giod luck with racing - what are you going to do now you have your licence?

Cheers,
Sam

For someone who started by saying they had no mechanical experience, I am very impressed.
I will be keeping a close eye for ideas for mine.

The fact that last year I needed help to change pads and discs shows...

I've been very lucky with some good mates who were willing to help and teach me. Google/YouTube/others blogs have been a big help aswell.

However, I'm now a mechanic in a touring car team and starting my mechanic and engineering nvq level 3 come September...

Err.....

Went to brands last weekend for the Kumho cup.

Well, first race went good. Finished 6th overall, 1st in invitational and 4th in Class C. I also found out i was running the same power, but 100kg heavier than the other Class C lads. So when it came to acceleration, i was loosing out, but would catch going into Paddock Hill and into Druids.

2nd race, started 5th, got to 3rd before Druids, and decided to go rallycrossing into Graham Hill Corner to avoid hitting the lad infant (he braked earlier than I expected him to). After a safety car due to some other lads getting amongst it at Paddock, i started making my way through the pack. Got back to 5th and someones water pump blew at Druids, but he dropped his coolant all the way until Sutrees.

Coming up to Sutrees, the lad in front went straight on after hitting the coolant, and when i hit it, i slid out. I stopped on the grass but i had stalled. As i got it started again, someone else hit the coolant, slid off and went straight into the back of me.

Shell is a write off, camber arms are bent, gearbox mount is broken, engine mount arm snapped... But the drivetrain etc are all fine.

Luckily, I'm picking a new shell up next week, so will be building a better/faster/lighter E36 and will be back for the 1st round next year!

Love your car, great work!

With all due respect, get yourself some driver training.

Even a few drift days on some crap tyres will teach you a lot.

Keep up the good work.

What makes you say that? When you hit coolant at around 85/90 there's not much you can do to save it?

I didn't see all the posts of your crash. My comment was based on some videos (in the wet) earlier in the thread, I wasn't referring to your crash. For some odd reason I didn't see those pictures.

Sorry to see you had a crash by the way.

Yer, that day at Silverstone taught me a lot and I did seek advice after it. I'm glad I had my go pro that day as I could see what I done wrong when I started to slide.

Silver linings and all that, I know i have pace, I just need better power to weight to help the acceleration. So, having a bare shell, I'll beable to get the car as light and good as I want it. Plus, I'll beable to have it painted any colour I want!
