Apologies for the long post ! ! eek
It's well-reasoned discussions like this (I can see both sides myself) that make PH worth reading for the less knowledgeable like me.

Keep it going chaps!

the cancelling of a stage is a right ballache!

However it can sometimes be as a result of spectators simply not listening to the safety car.

there's about 6-8 official cars that go through a stage before the 0 car does and any of those have the ability t stop a stage. It almost happened on WRGB a few years ago, I was in the radio car at my junction so heard it all unfold, FIA Safety car went through got to a section where spectators were in their hundreds on the right side of the bank, but a large group decided they wanted to be where they couldn't. FIA Safety stopped at the location asked them to move over the other side but which they did, a radio message was relayed to the Spectator Safety car about the location as they were coming through after FIA Safety.
Sure enough when Spec Safety came through they group were back to the prohibited area, they again stopped and asked them to move, they weren't happy this time and hurled abuse at the car, the guy on the loud haler handled it better simply by saying "if you do not move within the next minute then I will have the stage cancelled and all the people in the right area would be very upset with the you at wasting their time and money" then he immediately started counting down the minute!
More marshals were dispatched to the location and the stage ran, all be it a few minutes late.

As I've said on here before, no one is questioning the blokes outright speed or talent, but he constantly looks like he's about to bin it on just about every high speed corner he drives. It's shame someone can't reign him in and get him finishing on the podium consistently.
Latvala was like that for a few years...

Kubica 1.50 quicker than a cautious Ogier and still 33 seconds quicker than Meeke! Sounds like his tyre choice was spot on for the 3km of sheet ice!

Sheer number of spectators, probably standing in stupid places - and who won't move = stage cancelled. I think this is the 3rd year in a row the Monte have had stages cancelled. And all on a Saturday..... Coincidence??
They could always move the event back to a midweek event: as in the IRC days.....that seemed to work.

Tanak did indeed go off where I was watching 12 months ago. Fans but in a huge effort to get him back on stage!

Kubica crashed after the flying finish of the Col de Turini..

edit: Meeke says it was brake failure, with the pedal going to the floor.
