I have a 2.2 ctdi with 110k on the clock now, and I can honestly say it's been the most reliable car that I've ever had. I bought it with 8k on in 2005, It still has it's original exhaust, and original clutch. It has never even had an advisory when it comes to MOT time. Apart from normal service costs, brakes & tyres etc, the only thing that I had go wrong with it was the ABS unit, I changed that myself and it cost me about £350 for a refurbed one. I also had the cracked exhaust manifold problem, but Honda changed that for free (when it was 7 years old as well!)
Things to look for: clutch noises, if it's been abused or done a lot of town work, it may need a new clutch & DD flywheel, = expensive. See if it has had the updated alternator drive belt fitted (half hour job you can do yourself) or the alternator bearings can wear out (too much tension on the old type belt)apart from that, just look for the usual stuff that you'd check for with any 2nd hand car.
Check the dash warning lights, that they all come on prior to start up, and go off as they should.
Check service record, if not been done, flush through with new brake fluid (makes all the difference) drain & refill with correct HONDA coolant. Change the oil & filter regularly (6+ ltrs) and you'll have a great reliable car.

Can't say much about the diesel, but I've got a 2003 2.4 Petrol. It's currently pushing 185k.

No issues engine wise (clutch was replaced), although I'd look at consumable things like bushes, brake pads/discs etc.
