We are getting the urge to do another roadtrip this year in September and can't quite decide where to go this time. This is what we have done previously:-

2010 - Eurotunnel to Calais
Besancon
Annecy
Monaco
Rapallo
Maranello
Bormio
Freiburg
Reims

2011 - Ferry to Bilbao
Pamplona
Solsona
Carcasonne
Monaco
Courmeyer
Weggis
Colmar
Troyes

Roads ticked off amongst others - D966, Route Napoleon, Col de Torini, Nufenen, Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Grand St Bernard, Gavia, Stelvio, Fluella, Col de Bonnette, Route des Cretes.

Torn between doing the Ferry to Bilbao/Santander again and spending more time in Spain, or driving to the Lakes and taking a trip to Monza for the Italian GP.

Any suggestions/ideas gratefully received. We don't mind repeating some of it but would love to know about other places to stay/roads to drive too!

Many thanks in advance!

Prefer Spain. Best roads, least traffic and benign policing.

I’ve planned a two week zigzag across the Pyrenees with an option for the Picos de Europa or central Spain in late June with a probable second tour to Spain in September.

^^^^^ Same as Zed, we're off to Santander in May to do the Picos de Europa, Pyrenees (N260), in to Cannes, Monaco via Andorra and Millau bridge then back along the south coast for three days on the Costas before heading back to Santander and home (2 weeks).

In 2011 we drove to Romania (the Top Gear road) and Bulgaria via Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, before heading to Corfu and then taking the overnight ferry up to Venice and home. Amazing trip, and fascinating to see such very different places. (Hint - Sunday morning from Hamburg to Berlin is quiet, unrestricted autobahn with decent sightlines. We followed a local 964 Turbo...)

In 2012 we drove to Romania again, then came home via Hungary, Slovenia, and along the Bavarian Alpine Road, which is beautiful.

In 2013 we drove to Croatia, crossing the Alps to Lake Como. The roads of Istria are also very good.

Last year was an American year, but we're planning to hit the Nurburging 24 in May 2015 then take the ferry from Lubeck to Helsinki, drive up to the Arctic Circle, and come home via Sweden and Denmark.

If anybody's interested in details or advice on these routes, let me know.

Thank you!

NNH, what route did you take to Lake Como?

Hi Freddie. We actually started from Amsterdam because I was working there the previous week, but the route wouldn't be much different from Calais. We stopped in Geneva to see a friend, and we crossed into Switzerland over a pass that leads through Gex to Geneva. We left the A39 autoroute just after Dole, passing through Champagnole on the way to Gex. This cut out quite a lot of autoroute and was much prettier, as well as letting us enter Switzerland without needing a motoroway Vignette (saving ~CHF50).

From Geneva we took the main road through Chamonix and Courmayeur, but then took the autostrada towards Milan and Como. Geneva is a longish day from London, but the trip to Como was pretty easy after a late breakfast and a wander round Geneva. For what it's worth, we stayed in Bellagio which was gorgeous.

Spain is now looking less likely unfortunately due to restrictions on what day we can leave and sailings etc, may have to save this for another year.

As we can be more flexible using Eurotunnel, am now thinking of something along these lines which will incorporate Monza for the Italian GP (staying in Milan and getting the train to the Circuit):-

Have incorporated Neckarsulm if we can get an R8 factory tour and Mulhouse for the Schlumpf Collection.
Any thoughts or ideas on unmissable roads/places to stay etc? It will be for 10 or 11 nights and we're quite happy to do more miles - this is a very rough plan at the moment.

Thank you smile
