New Years resolution, want to scratch the 147 GTA itch.

Had a very early 147 1.6 when they were launched in June 2001, loved it and always vowed I'd have a GTA at some point. I'd like a Sunday car I can take the family out in and find I keep coming back to these. They look great value and assuming I don't buy a lemon don't think it will cost too much to run.

A bit particular in that I want red with full black leather and the telephone dial alloys. Looking on here and Autotrader. Anywhere else I should keep an eye?

Alfaowner has a classifieds section and AutoLusso sell cars from time to time (I believe they have a red 147 for sale now actually?).

Still miss mine after 4 or 5 years.

Cracking car that on the whole was very reliable with just a few minor problems to sort out that were age related such as thermostat, battery and ARB bushes. Personally i didnt find the 305mm brakes to be a problem so wouldnt be put off buying a car with them rather than the upgraded 330's

Regular cam belt and tensioner changes are recommended and IIRC it cost £650 ish some 8 or 9 years ago including a metal impeller water pump upgrade.

This just popped up on my Ebay feed - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-ALFA-ROMEO-147-V6-2...

Looks pretty honest and tidy.

This one is being sold on behalf of my friend who has moved abroad. It's well worth looking at - when I last sat in it, it was immaculate, and he took great care of it. In fact going for a ride in it for the first time made me buy my current car (a 3.0 GTV)!

It's been said many times, but buy the best one you can and you'll never regret it. The 147 GTA is going up in price a bit, too!

Just do it! I have recently have the same itch and got my GTA in early December. The noise of the Busso V6 is enough on its own to warrant buying one! Find out when the cambelt was last done, and budget for a change if around 3 years to be safe. It took mine straight to Autolusso for a cambelt and service. The red one for sale at Autolusso will be a good one, and it will have a service by them when sold. Certainly worth looking at.

Here's a pic of mine, in the very rare pearl white.

That does look the business.

There is another red one just come up in the classifieds that looks great value. Spoken with the owner, just trying to work out when I can get to see it.

I presume the new red one listed is the 05 one for 4.5k.
Looks ok (apart from the odd black paint on the wheels) but although it appears an honest car it is one that is at mid life refresh point.
It is certainly well overdue a cambelt change at nearly 6 years since the last one, most will have snapped by now with that gap. I wouldn't risk driving it to be honest incase it went!

Also needs a service, probably plugs too, clutch won't be best if its original, he mentions the suspension needing a refresh etc etc. No Q2 either, which is advisable. Just listing those things will be approx as follows

Belts/service 1000-1200
suspension - could be 1500 easy with new dampers all round and loads of other worn suspension bits
Maybe clutch - 600
Q2 - 600-700 (although if you combine with the clutch you may save a bit)
Maybe other bits and bobs - 500

That's before you've looked at wheels/tyres, discs/pads etc

So you're looking at potentially another 4.5k to get it all done (or more), 3k as a minimum if the clutch/wheels/tyres/brakes are ok and you don't want a Q2 (which you do).

Still, with all that done it would be a 8k car, so he's not far off with the price!

Remember, generally there is no such thing as a 'cheap' GTA(unless you are lucky with someone underpricing a sorted one).

I am not saying the car advertised is a bad one, its just due some maintenance it seems and this can be more than people imagine sometimes.

Also consider the V6 Alfa GT - essentially the same car underneath, and very nearly as practical (with the rear seats down, I've had a washing machine, full-size Dyson vacuum, Microwave, toaster, kettle and a decent-sized toolbox in my diesel GT)

to my (biased) eyes, the GT is a little more exclusive, due to its Coupe silhouette - there's a few on Autotrader

I'm selling my GT at the moment. Yes It is easily the most practical of all the GTA's apart from the Sportwagon.

Anyone know this car? Been for sale a while now and other than the colour it looks a good example. Up that way at the weekend, is it worth looking at?

Don't know the car, but it does look a good example. There is a good chance it has the bigger 330mm brakes due to it's 54 reg.

I believe that dealer has a "reputation" (formally keighley sports and performance IIRC) so go in with your eyes wide open.
