The air cooled 911 . I swear I have actually tried not to like them .
I've tried everything , everything . From modern HyperCars to classics from other manufacturers . Nothing comes close . Even Porsches of modern times (apart from the Carrera gt) hold no LONG TERM interest and are a shadow a pastiche of the real deal . Sure I fall in love with others but the novelty wears off . The grass ISN'T greener and I always creep home with my tail between my legs .
I love the way they feel , sound and above all else drive . I love the fact that I can fix it enough to get home ( stupid old ME !) , that it's still fast enough , that's it gets positive reactions ( no shaking hand motions directed at an old 911) and yet they are still strong and comfortable enough for daily use . They fit on real roads , they ride on real roads , they are fun at sane speeds on real roads and in all conditions yet they can still hold their own on a track even today . There is one for every mood , for every purpose , for every climate and even every budget . I had an epiphany tonight , I completely and utterly adore them all ; they are the best cars ever made .

I admit it , I Kneel before Zod
Sorry for my ramblings

Agreed, and if I could find Harris's Green Tuthill Monster, I would buy it tomorrow.

Are you thinking of getting one then?

I would love an air cooled 911 and have thought about trading mine in for one but I know the history of mine and I get scared reading horror stories about 'old' 911's.

Would love a Singer - best of both worlds?

Totally agree. Not driven anything that matches them ... the machine like feel, control weights, the build, sound, drivetrain, size, etc.. and that includes all ferraris i've tried and all modern Porsches. Still interested to own and try lots more other things but for the time being, a good aircooled is king.

Footnote: a good elise or Caterham is a great experience too for many of the same reasons but they are not complete cars, do not have the pedigree (esp. in the drivetrain) and are hopelessly throwaway compared to a timeless 'keep it forever' aircooled.

and that's why we each year we drive them over to Spa, thrash them round the track for a couple of days and drive them home again. They just take in their stride and I'm positive they love it as much as we do. biggrin

Honestly , I wasn't drinking when I wrote that lol.
Thank you for the many additions , I neglected to mention the mechanical feel and perfectly weighted inputs etc .

They really are the best things ever made .

Let's turn this thread into a little celebration of the air cooled Porsche . Feel free to put up pictures , observations , stories etc

I had this 2.8 RSR Replica from 1986 to 89, I rallied and raced it with a lot of success.
I Always drove it to and from events, bolted on the slicks put the numbers on and Always drove home, not once did it ever let me down, a fabulous car, but not one i would want to drive around in on the road these days ( I think! )
As has been said, the more you pushed it the better it became and never got hot and bothered.
I now have a nicely modified 996 T which is a tremendous car, and very much reminds me of my old 911, but oh SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much nicer to drive on the road.
I intend to hillclimb it this year after a few more mods, until I get to rag it properly I cannot comment on its ultimate ability, I have high expectations though.

In an ideal world I would have both, and my recently sold Mk 2 Escort rally car smile

I'm with you on this...

most fun car i've ever driven? 930 Turbo.

The boost is hilarious, even on a standard exhaust it pops and crackles on the overrun...the feel of the primary controls and the way the steering goes light and the nose lifts through acceleration... i could go on and on about how much i love that car.

more than anything though, it makes every journey feel special.
