Evening all,

I'm looking for a new car and I'm looking for advice.

A change of job has forced me into looking for a diesel car. I'm currently driving a 2007 Astra SRI but it's not going to be any use for a 300 mile commute back home at the weekends.

I've budgeted around £6000 and I've spent the last week or so looking for ideas. I hadn't really thought about a Volvo, I'd been looking for an Insignia or Citroen C5. However, I've seen a 2008 2.0 R - design and it looks brilliant. More stylish than any of the other mundane saloons on the market.

I just wondered of anyone had any advice? What are they like on long journeys for economy, comfort etc.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Martin

Can't comment on the economy side as its the T5, but comfort wise, our V50 (S40 estate) is incredibly comfy, whereas the C5 is not doing my back any good at all.

Sadly due to our varying commutes, my wife gets to drive the T5.

My C5 is the 110hp 1.6. It's woefully underpowered, and would struggle if I had a load of passengers. Does give me 50mpg on the 80 mile round trip though.

Should also say, the S40 is not really the same class as the Insignia/C5, it is more Focus size. The S60 is the direct equivalent of those.

Defo must buy!! Iv brought an 08 plate s40 d5 rdesign and I love it. My previous car was a bmw 320d msport. Although the bmw was beautiful the Volvo is much more exciting. I more mpg from the Volvo also. I'd recommend them 100%

They are very comfortable and there aren't many weaknesses for expensive things that go wrong. It is a smaller car than an Insignia or a C5 by quite a bit though, as previously mentioned. You have to watch out for the DPF system on the 2.0 cars, I believe on many it's a system where the filter needs replacing at 72K and the fluid needs topping up (and the computer told so) ever 36K. That would be enough for me not to bother, although many other cars are the same.

For your budget you should be able to get one with the D5 engine - it's absolutely fantastic and miles better than any 4 pot diesel. I have one in my C70 and I've remapped it to 225bhp (from 180bhp stock) and with a manual box average 46MPG and can get well into the 50s if I set the cruise control to 60MPH. They are less common but the engine is miles nicer and you get a maintenance free DPF.
