Just finished a contract recently and "Jesus". How bad is the market Well it's a move back down south again for me, got a contract back in the City! The Cerbera will be here soon, well actually about 10-12 weeks I hope!

Tell me about it, I'm looking to get a permie job in the Manchester area. Not easy at the moment, still at least I have my current one down south (for the time being anyway).

A few of my mates have abandoned IT completely and gone into something else. They were fed up of being made redundant!! One's now a kitchen fitter (not doing to badly either).

I'm due up for renewal at the end of the month and the client isn't able to renew.

If I can't find anything in the M3/M4 corridor then I may be forced to make that trek into London I've been not wanting to do.

So what's this then, a forum for disillusioned IT bods? Come on chaps, you had a good run while it lasted. Bet you earned more last month than I did!

I've bailed out, start a permie on Monday.

Between post-y2k blues, borderline recession, and IR35, the pitch has been well and truly queered. Still, Tony's business pals in EDS must be happy, so future NL funding is secure. How long before the Indian subcontinent gets fed up with being exploited and, seeing the UK IT workforce decimated, start to fleece UK businesses? Not long I'd wager.

Been round the block a few times, seen how these things work.

I guess I'm lucky, I'm in the process of being renewed for another 6 months Rates are low though, and so all the non contract people shouldn't really be under the illusion that it's so lucrative anymore.

What's this I hear about Greedy Gordon bringing in a tax on dividend income as well? Time for another visit to the accountant.

Was contracting , IR35 came along (knocked 25% off my gross earnings), marketplace was shaky.
so did the maths and went permie. If you can get a permie package that equates to at least 8 or 9 months of contract work then it has got to be worth it. I did.

I think plumbers are earning more than IT people at the moment... and if you are a builder in Surrey, then that's where the real money is...

Also I believe Oil & Gas industry is struggling at the moment as all of the uni leavers are going into IT.... straight forward supply and demand I think..

Me? Was contract, went permy 3 years ago, just made redundancies in my place so not exactly sitting pretty.

Why just at the moment? They've always earned more than most people in my experience ...

Bet I didn't.

Finished my last contract end of June and there's not much on the horizon, to say the least.

So, anyone know of any contract telecoms software engineer vancancies?

And does the Cerbera go now while the market's good or does it stay until no-one else can afford to buy [or run] it?

I've been IT permy for last 12 years all in Local Authority.

Been in management roles for the last 8 of those and I'm now seriously thinking about taking a plumbing course

IT doesn't seem to be treat as a propper skilled profession anymore We prefer accountants

Many companies I deal with are now struggling for work.

Worst I've seen the IT environment in my 12 years.

Over the last 2 years I've moved myself completely non technical and into business skills eg. Project Management, Portfolio Management and Business Reengineering.

Never thought I'd see the day when techies were so undervalued

In my experience, worst in ten years.

Quite a few recruitment agencies going to the wall.

Of the dozen or so IT contractors I know, none are
currently in work.

This is not the time to be taking on new commitments,
like car loans or mortgages.

No offence chaps, but this is the most boring thread I've ever read! It is bad news if IT has gone AWOL and is no longer OK, but the same thing happened to TVR once upon a time....

If you are clever enough to have made decent money and bought your dream car, then you are clever enough to make some more money! Just change the way you think a bit.

I work for the enemy. A bitter twisted accountant (last decades wonderkids). Currently engaged in the International Audit department booting out the IT Contractors who seem to be invoicing us lots of money for not actually adding anything. I don't blame you guys, I blame our own management!

It's bad out there, it took me 8 months to move on to another contract however I was fortunate enough to be in contract for the whole period while looking around.

If it came to the worst I'd go permie (or leave the country) but having said that many companies have a freeze on permie headcount in favour of contract staff . More flexibility for the client I guess.

Not a good time to enter TVR ownership or any further financial committment of any kind methinks .

'Bet I didn't.'

Actually I forgot - it was £250 for July.

'And does the Cerbera go now while the market's good or does it stay until no-one else can afford to buy [or run] it?'

If things are really bad, declare it SORN and get your insurance back pro rata. You can still polish it, and think of the petrol tax you'll save. Gordy hasn't taxed polishing yet. Perhaps he will introduce asset tax, where you pay X% of what you're worth until we all have nothing, no investments and no pension either. We need a revolution. Or our £10Bn back from the bloody EU.

If I was Chancellor, I'd bring in 'car benefit allowance' to help with car running costs. As I pay for other people's children, they can pay for my car!

The IT market is at an alltime low - I'm stuck in a SH*T permy job on a project that is run by total numptie t*ssers, and I can't see a way out of it.

It's not good
