Not a good start to 2015 - XC90 Auto stuck in park !

Went out to the car last week to find it stuck in park - rammed solid, gear lever not moving.
Quick check on google suggests giving it a good tug to free it up - DO NOT DO THIS!!!
I did - on the plus side it came out of park, on the down side - the gear lever came loose and you had to stir it like a bowl of porridge to get a random gear
4 days later, car has returned from local indy and relieved me of £400 - turns out that a small plastic rod connects the lever release button to the lever - this had broken and stopped the release ( a common fault according to volvo dealer) - when i 'released' it - I managed to snap the level and generally make a bit of a mess of the mechanism so the guys had to spend a while dismantling the jigsaw, fixing the broken bits and putting it back together
Looking back, i did notice that the release button was getting further and further extended at the bottom (away from the lever) - this was probably a sign of the rod failing, so i post this for any XC90 owners to check and if they find the same problem to get that rod checked out - its a cheap bit that can cause a costly repair or recovery!
