Finally got round to picking up my new gearbox ... Halfwits ATF is listed as a semi-synthetic though - is that OK to use in a T5 box?

I get like that sometimes when Dave goes into his informative "warandpeace" mode.
I thought "oh no" when I read his stuff about stripping the wallpaper off my synchros with Royal Purple, but 12,000 hard miles after putting the stuff in I still have synchros and a smooth (for a T5) gearbox.

...plus (of course) it was also a link to the first page of this thread. wink

I was assuming I'd just use ATF but the Halfwits stuff is fully synthetic.

It's a 'new' box - bought from Racing Green a couple of years ago but has never been fitted and has never turned a wheel - so shouldn't have the stylish flock wallpaper (or maybe it's anaglypta in which case, do you need to paint it rather than lubricate it?) so I guess I could just use the Penrite stuff.

Gharrrrrrr!

All designed to cheer the happy motorist.
Don't you have proper independent motor factors in Wiltshire, or wherever it is you live? We have five different ones here in New Ark (as BT calls the town near where I live). Spoilt for choice I am.;)

We have a *REALLY* poor Camberly Auto Factors in Salisbury and that's about it ... I think that many areas of Wiltshire don't even have electricity! biggrin

I don't mind ordering oil ... it's just what is the best thing to get. Not a hurry though as I still haven't got the engine rebuilt yet. frown

Anything half decent is probably the right answer. It's bordering on agricultural machinery rather than a finely honed racing machine, after all. If I remember the previous thread correctly, a fully synth MTF or a good ATF, but someone will correct me.

Hi Dave (its Simon (Scuttles bro-in-law) semi syn Dex 3 will be just fine its all I have ever used along with many others in my T5 10 years + no problems ever, semi-syn/syn blend etc is a bit of a sales ploy IMO anyway, unless the oil is fully syn why bother mentioning it scratchchin

Hi Simon, thanks, I have had a reply back from Tremec ( which is a miracle in its self ! ) they said Dextron 3 ATF ( I suppose they mean DEXRON ! ) or I can use quote = "Mobil 1 as an upgraded synthetic, either is suitable in this case " so that means I can use anything and they are contradicting themselves !

Not sure its too critical what ATF Dave I have always used genuine Isuzu Dexron 111 because I purchased drums of the stuff in a fire sale hehe and yes some literature say Dextron this is the UK so its Dexron the correct spelling to me laugh

Mine has been running on Royal Purple for the last 10,000 miles. My TVR guy had heard the recommendations.
It was immediately noticeably quieter, but then any car is quieter after an engine oil change.
No ill effects noticed to date.

I have been searching a bit and found the reason Tremec recommend Mobil 1 is that its the only synthetic oil they have tested.
I am going for a mineral ATF the trouble is finding a quality oil, most of the ones on offer are cheap brands or brands ive never heard of.
